I had been battling abnormal paps for about 2 years. Done colposcopy and d & c with no improvement. Heavy bleeding, pain all the time. Also had incontinence that was getting worse each week. So decision to have hyster was easy for me. I had my tubes tied 15 years ago so the issue of no more kids didn't come into play with me. I had to go to Urolgist for testing on bladder. Did that and finally got a date. November 4, 2002 was set up to be my crowning day!!! I was so excited. My DH was so nervous. I just wanted to feel better. Went to Castle week before for pre op tests. Got call the next am, chest x-ray looked suspicious. Had to go back for CT Scan. I WAS a smoker. Turned out was old scar tissue from bronchitis and beginnings of emphysema. Had to go to Pulmonary dr. to get cleared for surgery. Put me on inhaler and said I was lucky to not have any further damage to lungs from smoking. Needless to say, I smoked my last cig on Oct. 29. When I think about smoking, I just remember how scared I was getting CT scan and the relief that it wasn't as bad as I thought since Mom has lung cancer for 3rd time. Anyway, got cleared for surgery. Got to Castle at 6:00 am on the 4th and was taken straight to area for blood drawing and armband and fancy gown, etc. Hubby was so nervous. I was fine. I was taken to surgery for prep around 7:00 am. DH said he got call at 7:30 that surgery had started. Surgery lasted 2 hours and was back in my room at 10:30. Some pain but not much. Had morphine pump, which made me hurl (hurt like heck). After hitting it 3 times, I figured out that it was the morphine that was making me hurl. Got pain med by mouth 3 more times that nightl. The next morning I got a shower with help from DH and felt so much better. Was ready to go home. Finally got to go home on Wednesday. Nurses and drs said I did great. Felt sooooo good to get home to my own stuff. Anyway that is my castle story. Everyone took very good care of me. I did realize one thing.....Nurses are very underpaid. They were wonderful, always checking on me and asking if I needed anything. I'm glad its over. Now I'm looking forward to resuming all my pre op activities. Going for 6 week post op on the 18th. This site is wonderful... Wish I found it pre op....but better late than never. I will be reading the posts daily.....I told DH it's nice to read about other stories like mine and realize that lots of women feel just like me. Thanks again to all of you for posting, it really helps!!!!!
