Well starting from the begining...I had a normal cycle until I started taking birth control pills at 18. When I got off them, that is when the fun began. My periods got longer and heavier as the time went on. Soon, after adopting my three kids, I couldn't take the pain anymore. I saw my regular patient care provider and she told me I could either go back on birth control pills or she would refer me to a OB/GYN to explore the problem further. Not having had the best birth control pill experience, I opted to see the GYN. Upon meeting my new GYN, I liked him immediatly. We tried a few months of pain killers, none of which were helpful. So, in August of 2002 we went ahead with a laperoscopy. When I woke up my husband was in tears, I knew it was not good news. My dr said I had level 3 endometriosis all over and a large cyst on my right ovary and my left ovary wasn't looking normal, what ever that meant. So, at my post op from the lap, I was given several options, wait and see, lupron injections or a hysterectomy. I got all of the information that he had and then promptly came home and got on my trusty computer and searched for hours! I found hystersisters, my lifeline. I read everything I could, every story, every experience. My husband and I discussed every option, weighed pro's and con's and after much thought and prayer decided to go with a hysterectomy. Just making that decision was such a relief to me I can't begin to tell you. I got together with my GYN and made my castle date. December 19th 2002 at 7:30 a.m.
I had my pre-op's on the 16th. The one with my dr included a full exam and any last minute questions I or my husband had. Then to the hospital to get pre admited and pre screened. That was fairly easy, answered lots of questions, went over what to expect in the hospital and then had blood drawn and a urine sample given. Then the wait for the surgery.
The day before my surgery, I did the go-lightly. One word, YUCK! One hint given to me, it needs to be WELL chilled. That helped. The day of my surgery, I had not slept more than three hours, so I went and surfed the net for a few and double checked to make sure I had everything I needed for my stay. We got to the hospital and checked in at the admiting desk. We were taken upstairs to the surgery prep area. I was given the wonderful gown and then waited. The family care rep came in and introduced herself to my husband and arranged where to be at the end of surgery. My nurse came in and asked a bunch more questions and double checked my bands. Then the gurney came and off I went to the pre-op area. I gave my husband a kiss and down the hall I went. I got to the pre-op room and got my IV in place and the nurses and I were joking around, they loved my Christmas toe nail polish. (my hospital allowed toe nail polish, but not fingernail polish) Then the A-man came in and we went over the pro's and cons of the different anethesia. I had pretty much decided on a spinal, but didn't want to be awake for the surgery. So I had the spinal and a light general, or twilight. I also expressed my concern of nausea, as I hate that feeling. The A-man gave me a dose of something that made me quite sleepy, the last thing I remember is being wheeled out of pre-op. My surgery went well, it was an hour longer than expected, as my uterus and cervix were pasted to my bowels with endo. If I wouldn't have had the TAH/BSO it could have gotten life threating. The next thing I remember is hearing a nurse say "can you wiggle your toes for me sweetie?" I remember complying and then that nurse saying, she can go to her room now. Then I remember them saying we are waiting for a bed. Then I dozed off. I then woke up in my regular room, with my husband at my side and my parent at the foot of my bed. I asked them, shouldn't I be in more pain?? The nurse said, that is the great thing about the spinal. My hospital stay was pretty uneventful. All but one shift of nurses was excellent. I was there Thursday and checked out Sunday morning. I am quite emotional, as I am in complete surgical menapause, but I am getting better, slowly but surely. I am very sore, but doing well. The worst thing so far is the overwhelming feeling I get and the hotflashes. The waiting is really the hardest part.
