Ask A Doctor
I had surgery on 12/02/02. I was prepared for the worst and ended up with a very positive experience. I had very large ovarian tumor removed 15 years ago and the pain was tremendous and recovery time was months. We live on an island now were the medical approach is wait and see for years. After the birth of my daughter 5 years ago I started experiencing the same symptoms as before long painful periods, painful intercourse, a chronic ache in my pelvic area, plus constant peeing, leaking and pain and pressure on my bladder. After complaining every year for 5 years of the same symptoms, I finally had enough courgage to ask for a referal. I came over to the mainland to small hospital to see a new OB/GYN. She discoverd multilple growths on the ovary and ordered blood and urine work. She discovered my Type 2 diateties was way out of control and my hormons where a mess. It felt unbelievable to have an answer. How simple it was to get there. We scheduled surgery for September (you can not have surgery unless it is an emergenecy if you have high blood sugars, it makes your infection risk go up). She calls my primary who blows a lid about starting medication. I get my referal to an Diabeties Educator and we are on the way. Come September I come in for my pre op and she does more blood work and ends up cancelling surgery because my blood sugars are still very high and calls my primary again and raises cain. This time with pressure from her and the Educators they finally agree to starting insulin. In a week I begin to feel different and I don't pee every hour and instead of going through a pad for the unrine floods, by now I am way beyond leaking, I am almost able to get through 4 hours with the same pad. 5 weeks of good blood sugars and I am off to surgery.
The hospital is small, maybe 40 beds, surgery check in is easy, all of the paper work is done at your pre op. I meet the A MD, he talks to me about what they will use and side effects, moriphine makes me itch and sick, what ever he did it worked. He was great. I did end up having a LSH, BSO, bladder sling and some other support work.( A very mushy uterus and the ovary was a complete mess.)But only 6 small incessions in my belly. What a difference. I had the most supportive hospital staff, every 15 to 30 minutes the first day and night and then always someone every hour. I did spend end up spending 3 nights, I could not pee and after being straigh cathed 4 times I said enough and they sent me home with a cathetir for 5 days, gives the bladder a chance to relax. In the hospital and at home I had great pain control, but they really talked with me about it and I did take a medicine for nausa as well, plus stool softners. The gas and the bladder discomfort are the worst, but by one week I was up and going. I felt great, I get tired, and my bladder is cranky still but getting better. But compared to everything they did I feel great. It gets me in a bit of trouble doing to much. I do wish I had found this site prior to surgery. I have patch to control hot flashes, night sweats and the uncontrolable crying, we are still tweeking the dose. Reading all of the information that is here has been very helpful and extremely encouraging. It also helps to know that what I was and what I am experiencing is not in my head.
The one thing I can say is my OB/GYN and her staff were the greatest. They really cared and helped in all areas. I did not know that MD's generally do not usually interfer with another MD's case. And the hospital staff was amazing. I did not experience care like that a the larger hospitals I had been in. All of the staff would talk with you and help you, the CNA's were incredible. They had some of the best post op advice. Using warm toweletts to help you pee, keeping you clean and fresh all the time. so you feel better about yourself.
Thanks
Lisa
