First I must give thanks & praise for this site - it's a lifesaver in more ways than one. I've lived with fibroids for many years - the spotting, bleeding, painful situations that wouldn't go away. Several times I've bled for more than a month at a time until it seems that it was more normal to have a period than not have one. Each doctor wanted to have a wait & see attitude - even surgery for prolapsed uterus & incontinence was done. I wasn't informed of my options. The past 6 yrs have seen me thru hormone therapy, several doctors, 90lb. weight gain, etc. Finally, after bleeding all over my work area (chair & bathroom) & several trips to the ER I became so anemic & my blood count went so low that they had to build me up before even considered an operation of any kind. I was told that I would need blood tranfusion. After ultra sounds & scans it was determined that a TAH/BSO was the route for me - unavoidably so - 3 drs opins. 2 friends of mine had just the uterus removed (5/00 & 7/00). They helped me with my fears & this site gave me further "knowledge" & comfort. My surgery was 7/10/00. I was hyped going in, looking forward to a speedy recovery. The surgery went fine. I used the pain relief pump but elevated blood pressure & a fever caused me to stay in for 5 days (Thurs-Mon). Walking really helped with the gas & BM. Then they let me know that the pain killers caused constipation - so I stopped. I was having severe abdominal pain & the walking wasn't helping. Then the vomiting started. By that Wed. night I was constipated, vomiting, in pain. Everything I ate came back up just as it went in - undigested. My doctor said to come in - he had to call me in almost immediately 'cause I was vomiting the green & yellow bile from my stomach by then! Turns out, he re-admitted me into the hospital 3 days after being released! Seems my entire digestive sys., bowel & intestines had gone to sleep - there was no activity. The general surgeon, gyno & the neurologist teamed together. They said this sometimes happens after major surgery - the x-rays showed a blockage. We went into a wait & see. Nothing happened. My BP elevated, I was running a 101/102.7 temp. Then my BP went into the 200's over 100's - uncontrollable. I was placed in ICU Sat. nite. Not clear on anything until Mon. After the general surgeon did the rectal exam & said if nothing changed then he would have to go in surgercally my system woke up! The life was scared back into it (smile). BM, passing gas, burping - you never know how sweet it is to be able to do those things until you can't....They started removing all the tubes, took me off oxygen & put me on a full liquid diet. I came out of the hospital yesterday (Wed.). Resting fine, walking, no pain except minor discomfort from an overactive bowel now...that I'll take any day over the alternative. Just be aware & walk, walk, walk. Best to all
