The Emergency

Once upon a time there was a lovely lady named Iris. Iris lived a busy life taking classes in school and working a job at the same time. Even at the age of 27, she had more than her share of illnesses and yet she walked on through her days, making the most of her situations. All at once, Iris was sicker than ever before. Heading to the hospital, the doctors and the nurses all rushed to see what was the matter with Iris. They hooked her up to every machine. They ran all the tests. They kept her in bed while they ran up and down the hallways with x-rays, scans, and blood test results. Huddling near her bed, the doctors all consulted the tests and talked to each other. Finally, they nodded and grimmly turned to Iris who lay in bed extremely sick.

"Iris, dear, the time has come when we have no choice. We must rush you into the O R right away or you may die. We will take good care of you, but you are very sick. We will need to take a look inside but what we suspect is that your uterus and ovaries must come out! We need your signature. Sign here."

Iris, gulping back the tears and the fears of this horrible news, hardly had a chance to read the papers before she was whisked away as she signed the bottom line. All the way down the hallway to the operating room she cried. She didn't have a husband. She didn't have any children. She cried for the children she would never carry inside her.

Waking up many hours later, she looked around the room and noticed that she was in a totally different room than before. She was feeling sleepy and yet she noticed that the room was full of sun shine and rainbows. Groggily she looked around her and saw the loveliest handmaiden sitting beside her holding her hand.

"Oh, hello Princess Iris," said the handmaiden. "I've been sitting right here waiting for you. How are you feeling? I'm here to make sure that you are comfy. Do you need another pillow?"

Iris, obviously confused, could only stare. "Princess?" she asked. "Why did you call me a princess? And where am I? This doesn't look like my hospital!"

"Oh, no, dear. This isn't your hospital. This is the king's castle in the Land of Hyster. You now belong to the king. He brought you here as soon as he heard of your dilemma. He sent his best tailors to do the work on your tummy. He sent me to sit with you and care for all your needs. This is the Land of Hyster and you are Princess Iris! If you need anything, you are to tell me and I'll send word to the king. Or, if you like, you can talk to him yourself." the handmaiden replied.

And so, Princess Iris lay in her bed propped up among many pillows as the handmaiden told her all about the Land of Hyster. She was told about the Hyster Sisters. She was told about this amazing land and the wonderful king.

"But," began Princess Iris, "I'm so sad. I'll never have a child growing inside me. I've been so sick and I'm so sad. I feel like I won't be a whole person missing all these parts that I need to be a woman." And with that fear spoken in words, tears streamed down Iris' face.

The handmaiden sat by Iris and held her hand. After all, when someone is grieving there are no magical words to say to soothe the pain. And so, day after day the handmaiden sat by Iris, listening to her and taking care of her needs.

One day, Iris woke up from a nap to find the king standing in front of her. He was standing quietly near the foot of her bed with the most wonderful smile on his face. "Princess Iris. I've come to see you personally. You've been through so much I wanted you to know especially that I love you. You may have some important parts missing that could not be salvaged, but you are totally whole. You are may not be able to have a child grow within your womb, but you will be able to have a child grow in your heart. Many children will be able to sit on your lap as you hug them, sing to them and tell them stories. Any child would be blessed to be raised in your arms. Remember Iris, you are loved by me, I have taken care of you and will continue to care for you. And now, I've brought you a present: your Hyster Sisters."

And with that introduction the Hyster Sister arrived quite noisely. They came into her room chattering away and introducing themselves to the newly punctured princess. They held her in their arms. They cried with her. They tucked her into her bed. Each day brought more hyster sister visitors to Iris' room. Soon, the day came with Princess Iris left the castle and began her life in the Land of Hyster with the sisters as her neighbors. They had tea parties together. They rejoiced as Iris ventured out on a blind date with a new fellow. They were friends.

And they all lived happily ever after and were hormonally balanced forever. The End.
