I've heard of women taking testosterone along with their estrogen replacement therapy. How does it help and what could a woman expect from adding testosterone to her hormone therapy?
Many women believe that testosterone helps them a great deal. It is known to add energy and clarity of thinking.
Often, especially after the removal of the ovaries, the lack of testosterone can make a woman feel like a tired dishrag. Adding a small, woman-sized dosage of testosterone has been reported to provide:
1. More energy
2. A feeling of involvement, rather than apathy, or numbness along with a return to more emotion in my life.
3. A reduction of feelings of anxiety
4. Improved sex life from increased sexual thoughts and body response.
Finding testosterone products can be a challenge. Although several products are in various stages of clinical trials, there are few testosterone products currently available for women. Off-label (men's products with dosage cuts) and compounded testosterone cream/gel are some choices.
Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms you think would be helped by adding testosterone.
