Ask A Doctor
Hello, my name is Maria. I am 38, married my dh in 1987 and have one 12 year old boy.
My problems started when I was about 17 years of age when I had to leave work one day due to acute pain in my lower right pelvic region. I went to my first appointment with a GYN a day later.
I had my first pelvic exam completed. The doctor took three guesses as to what the cause of my pain was...eptopic pregnancy, apendicitis, or a PID. I was sent home with 2 prescriptions. One for birth control and an antibiotic. He never did any more tests. I got well and that was the end of it.
A few months past and that familiar pain came again. It lasted for about a week and then left as quickly as it had showed up. This goes on and on several times throughout the years. On top of this I had irregular periods and clots and the doctor said being on the pill would help get me regular. I still had clots and the bleeding I considered normal. It wasn't as heavy as some ladies here experience but it wasn't spotting either. I mentioned the pain and this to my doctor at every exam and nothing was ever done. No tests or anything. Exams were painful to say the least. No doctor I went to even batted an eye. I think at one point I was even told it was all in my head.
Met my dh in 1986. The pain reared its head from time to time while we were dating and we had always passed it off as a pulled muscle. It always was intermittent so we didnt really think much about it. I had tried to get someone in the medical profession to help me but to no avail.
Dh and I married in March of 1987. I had been on the pill for several years so far but had gotten off if them during the second year of marriage. Several months later, we got pregnant with our only child. That was the greatest time in my life. Everything went well and I had him by c-section.
Off and on through the next several years, the pain in my lower right section would come and go. At the prodding of my family I would go to countless doctors because of it. Still no exact diagnosis. I kept track of every cycle and of the pain and got no where.
As time wore on and I think back now, the more fatigue I felt and the pain, although irregular, had progressivly gotten worse. I was off birth control and my periods had regulated but were still as dense and clots still existed. By December of 2001, I was in constant pain but it seemed to be spreading through the lower pelvic area to the left side. Sometimes it would be as mild as an ache, sometimes it would feel like a knife twisting inside me. When it was constant, I was not able to stand upright. I finally decided to succumb to "it" taking me down this time. My dh insisted. He picked up the phone and we called our family doctor. I was able to be seen within the hour. I was afraid of what they would find, mainly why I put it off alot of times. But I was finally going to be cared for.
I had the CT scan, vaginal and abdominal ultrasounds. Sent to various other doctors for other opinions. One of which even suggested I had Lymphoma, only going on what I had described to her and her exam of me. Eeek! Talk about a scary feeling! Ultimately all had suggested a diagnostic lap. I went for it. That was done on April 14th, 2002. I finally had an answer to the pain within. I had scar tissue covering my right ovary and tube and adhesions on most everything, pulling my ovaries up and was my source. The doctor said the scar tissue was from a PID I had gotten at some point and didn't know it. The result of that was ever growning scar tissue strangling my right ovary and tube. They dont even know how I was able to have had my son 12 years earlier. They and we call him a miracle.
I had been asking all along before this that I just wanted it all out and I got my wish. The doctors told me after the lap that they suggested a complete hysterectomy, both tubes, ovaries, uterus and cervix. I sighed, relief from my constant "companion" was right around the corner. All I thought of right after they told me was OMG and YIPEE at the same time.
I had recovered from the lap surgery and immediately searched the net on hysterectomies. Thats how I found Hyster Sisters. I don't know how I would have gone through this surgery without my sisters. Everyone has been so caring and supportive, no matter what. There is so much love for each other it can be seen and felt all around this site. I have learned much from the ladies here and I feel like I have grown into a better woman, wife, mother and friend because of my sisters. Thank you all. I have finally found a place where I belong, unconditionally.
May 20, 2002 I went into the castle for a TAH/BSO, problematic cervix went too. I stayed 2 1/2 days. Everybody was great at the castle. I had all the help any new Princess would ever ask for. My dh and ds made the best pillow police!
I healed up without complications. If I had to do it all over again, I would, in a heartbeat! It was the best thing I have done. I am very happy with my results.
I started HRT right in the castle and have been on the Vivelle Dot 0.1 mg patch since the first week after the surgery. I LOVE it!
Thank you for taking the time to read this. If I can help or be of support, feel free to contact me.
