Ask A Doctor

My name is Dorrie. I am 43 with 3 little kids, no pets and a doctor for a DH. I actually found Hystersisters in July of 2001 when my mother, at age 75, had a hysterectomy and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I didn't register then, but scoured the boards for information on how best to prepare her for her surgery and how to help her afterwards.

My mother had a history of a number of other cancers, and her gyn-oncologist suggested I have some tests done routinely to check for ovarian cancer too. Right after Thanksgiving of 2001, my CA-125 (a blood test that is sometimes used to screen for ovarian cancer) came back elevated. More tests - MRI, CT, PET. Nothing appeared wrong, but my CA-125 continued to climb, so right after New Years 2002, I checked into the castle for a lovely stay.

I had a TAH/BSO with a bikini type incision, a morphine pump for pain and was walking (well, sort of) just a few hours after my surgery. Other than dealing with oversalted broth and slimy green jello, I had a fairly easy recovery.

My initial path report was negative for cancer and I was all smiles. My gyn-onc had other ideas however, and sent the tissue to another pathologist - one who only looks at gyn cancers (can you imagine!). I did have a very early stage ovarian cancer, and I am forever grateful that it was found early.

I love hystersisters and spend most of my time in the Hormone Jungle. I'm really working on being healthier, so I should spend more time getting support from all of you in Hysteritaville. I pop into Cancer Concerns from time to time to say hello to all the ladies who supported me during my diagnosis and recovery.
