Hi and welcome to Hystersisters! I’m delighted to have been asked to serve as a Hostess on this wonderful site!
I’m 45, live in Northern California and got married to a wonderful man in September 2000.
For about 8 years I was the lead singer and bass player for a country/rock band. I decided to get back into the workforce and am currently in charge of Marketing Communications for a company I started working for in 1986 as a secretary! I’m also the President of my local chapter of the American Business Women’s Association.
I started noticing odd periods in 1998 --- some were longer than others (12 days), sometimes I’d miss a period.. Over a year ago I started having very heavy periods with huge clots, which truly started scaring me. I went to my GP who put me on hormones to see if that would help (it didn’t). Last October my aunt came to visit, and when I discussed what was happening with her I learned that she’d had a hyst when she was about my age for the same reason (and said it was the best thing she’d ever done). Needless to say, this put my mind at ease somewhat.
My periods in January and February were heavy (and constant!), so I went back to my GP. He tried to do an endometrial biopsy. I say tried because he had trouble getting tissue because my cervix was so tight (I’ve never had children) and my uterus was tipped. I left feeling completely violated, and on the way out the door asked for a referral to a female gynocologist.
In April I met my wonderful gyn. She sent me for blood tests and an ultrasound --- it turns out that I had a fibroid and my uterus was the size of a 4 month preganancy. She performed an endometrial biopsy (didn’t feel much more than a pap exam) to rule out any other problems. She also brought up the possiblity of my needing a hysterectomy. That’s when I typed in “hysterectomy” in the Google search bar and found this wonderful site. Boy, did I do some reading here!
In May we reviewed all the options and decided that a hyst was the best course of action. I wound up having a TAH because of the size of the fibroid and the fact that I’d never had children. The only problem was that I was so anemic there was no way she could operate, so I had 2 shots of Lupron prior to my surgery to stop the bleeding (I was also taking Slo FE to combat the anemia).
My surgery went very well (and quickly!), and I had an uneventful recovery, thanks to my wonderful husband, Art. He was (and continues to be) a true prince to this princess!
My “Guide to the Land of Hyster” was a wonderful resource, which I showed to my mother and then eventually gave to my gyn. I highly recommend that any of you ladies doing research visit the HysterSisters Store and buy it! It’s well worth the price and helps to support this site. I also got the HS nightshirt (which I still wear) and the tummy pillow!
I am feeling well and very excited to have an opportunity to contribute to this wonderful website! Welcome to HysterSisters --- you’ll find a lot of information, support and hugs here!
All the best,
Lynda
