Hi, my real name is Barbara and my nickname, Miss Shoefly, was given to me after I sang "Shoo Fly, Don't Bother Me" to a neighborhood kiddo to quiet his tears. I am a Hostess in the Post Op Forum, but I visit other forums as well.
I have lived in South Florida for 25 years and officially have "sand in my shoes." I never plan to move back north. It's cold up there! My husband and I have been married 36 years and we have three grown daughters, one terrific son-in-law, one 2-year-old grand daughter, two cats, and a dog. I love to work in my yard, and I play bridge, read novels, and like action/adventure movies.
My major in college was Pre Med, but I did not continue my education past my Bachelor of Science. I worked in hospitals and also in physician's offices. I have also worked as a bookkeeper in a preschool, a youth coordinator in a church; and, my husband and I owned a lumber company for a while. I volunteered in my children's schools and in my church. I have always been a busy lady.
The good Lord has blessed me with good health but I have a family history of ovarian cancer. So, I have always been especially diligent with pap smears and annual exams, especially when I entered my 50's. But, even with being watchful, an ovarian cyst went undiscovered until I was operated on for a ruptured appendix. Because of the infection from the appendix, the surgeon could not safely remove the ovarian tumor and I was operated on a second time eight weeks later and had a TAH/BSO. I did not have ovarian cancer, but did have a carcinoid, uterine fibroid, and chronic cervicitis which had produced abnormal pap smears for five years.
After my hysterectomy, I was interested in finding out more information. I was too scared to do any research before the surgery. During my information search on the internet, I found Hyster Sisters. What a blessing this website has been! I was fortunate and had an uncomplicated post op course, but I had every possible "normal" consequence -- such as, constipation, hot flashes, insomnia, and hit a few "bumps" along the way. The gals on Hyster Sisters answered my questions, provided support, allowed me to vent, and were kind and loving through it all.
I am hopeful that my education and past experiences will equip me to be a helpful hostess on Hyster Sisters. It is a wonderful website, offering encouragement and support to a woman at a very special time in her life.
Feel free to email me any time.
