Welcome to Hyster Sisters!! I'm Twyla, hailing from beautiful Colorado... where it's the ATTITUDE, not the altitude
In my offline life, I am a TP Queen employed by a bathroom tissue manufacturer... a virtually recession-proof career I am in my forties, married 20+ years my DH, have two priceless daughters, and a jack russell terrier named Zeke. I grew up as a poor kid in a large family on an Iowa farm (think EllyMay Clampett before she went to Beverly Hills). Graduated from a small college w/ a degree in home ecomonics. I enjoy counted cross-stitch, gardening, music, and my player piano, and can do a dead-on imitation of Edith Bunker singing *Those Were the Days*.
I have always found myself reaching out to help others, as a resident advisor in college, and as a speaker for prospective adoptive parents in Colorado. And now, I find myself supporting other hystersisters here.
In March 1999, I began experiencing symptoms of uterine prolapse. I did research, got 3 different medical opinions, and scheduled a TVH for April 1999. The surgery went smoothly, and I tried very hard to be a model patient. However, at three weeks post-op, I was back in the hospital with a blood clot the size of a tennis ball. Definitely a bumpy detour on the road to recovery, and a testament to call your doc if you are not making steady progress in your return to good health! I found the AOL hysterectomy support board when I was pre-op... That's where I met Kathy. This website was a speck on the internet back then, and it has GROWN into an international circle of friendship & support that I am honored to be a member of!! Part of the healing process for me was posting on the message boards here & on AOL to *take my turn* giving back the support that I had received. I hope the torch will continue to be passed from woman to woman in this spirit. This place inspires me
Things I have learned since I became a Hyster Sister: 1) I am grateful for my good health & am faithfully reading food labels and exercising more (I am a hercules in the kegel olympics!!). 2) I know exactly what to do to help a friend/neighbor in need: bring dinner! 3) I am thankful for online friendships and support (a special thank-you to my surgery twin, Barbara, for NOT being an axe murderer when we met in real life!). 4) There are worse things in life than having a hysterectomy. You will survive this.
To any LIW's who read this: I urge you to get smart about your symptoms and options and make the best decision for YOU.
To the post-op ladies, I wish an uneventful recovery and a return to even better health. Don't overdo it... listen to your body... you have one chance to heal right, and you're WORTH IT.
