Ask A Doctor
Hi, my name is Tina. I was born in Philadelphia and live in southern New Jersey. I am 43 y/o and have been married for 20 years. I have two (no, make that four!) wonderful children; a 16 y/o daughter, a 13 y/o son, and two mutts, whom we all think of as part of the family.
My chosen career is that of a Respiratory Therapist in the health care field. I have been blessed to have had a rewarding and challenging career. For the past couple of years I have been specializing in asthma management.
My journey to HysterSisters began this past December, 2000. I was not having any unusual problems , but was long overdue (by about 9 years!) for a yearly GYN check-up. No excuses for not going….shame on me! My GYN notified me that my PAP was abnormal, and a colposcopy followed. My GYN kept trying to reassure me that she believed that the abnormalities showed pre-cancerous cells due to the HPV virus, but of course, only the path reports would confirm. The results from the colposcopy also showed "pre-cancerous" cells, so I was scheduled for a LEEP procedure. The path results from that were positive for squamous cell carcinoma, and the margins were not clear. It's hard to describe the feeling you get when you hear cancer!
My next visit was to the ONC GYN, husband in tow. This Dr. explained to me that my options were a radical hysterectomy (TAH BSO) which included removal of surrounding lymph nodes for pathology testing, OR I could opt for chemo/radiation. The Dr. left the decision to me, stating that either option would have the same expected outcomes. I didn't even have to think about it, I wanted the surgery as I wanted the cancer out NOW!!
And so I began my internet search, which miraculously brought me to HysterSisters! I was so impressed with the level of compassion and understanding of all of these women. I found it to be reassuring that I was not alone and that there were others who could understand what I was feeling. HysterSisters became my lifeline! I had to wait 8 weeks from the date of the LEEP until my surgery. It was probably the longest 8 weeks of my life, and I found myself on the message boards daily, usually more than once! It really helped to prepare me, and my family, for what to expect.
I became a punctured princess on March 16, and am so thankful to report that surgery was successful. I now have frequent follow-ups with the ONC GYN; they started at every 2 months and I have just graduated to every 3 months. I will eventually move up to every 6 month visits up until I am cancer free for 5 years, at which point I will be able to have yearly checks. I have stayed with the HS boards as I feel a kindred spirit with all of the Ladies who post here!
