I am a HysterSister
September 1, 2015
Why did you/your doctor decide a hysterectomy was your best option? What was your diagnosis? What treatments did you try before deciding to have a hysterectomy?:
After 15 plus years of increasingly painful monthlies, I decided that it was time to discuss my options. I had tried birth control, but it was mearly a band aide. After discussing with my OB/GYN a hysterectomy would be advisable.
What helped you the most before/after your hysterectomy?:
Before my hysterectomy I talked several friends who had recently undergone a hysterectomy. They gave helpful advice and tips. After my surgery, my loving husband, son and close friends were the biggest help. They made sure that I rested and followed doctors orders.
What was your biggest fear or concern going into your hysterectomy?:
My biggest fear was finding something far more serious i.e. Cancer
I am still waiting for pathology results.
What was the best recovery gift you received?:
The phone calls, text messages, Facebook posts from friends and loved ones wishing me a speedy recovery. Having their thoughts and prayers helped more than they will ever know.
What advice would you give to another woman considering a hysterectomy? What is the most important thing women should know when faced with a hysterectomy?:
Connect with other women and have a support system. You will need folks to help & understanding for weeks to come afterwards. And rest... lots and lots of rest! Listen to your body.
What surprised you the most (either before of after your hysterectomy)?:
The day after my surgery I was in a lot of pain and had a brief moment of regret. I spoke about the fleeting feeling with my husband. We both agreed that it was because of the intense pain. I now feel as if it was the best decision I ever made.
What is one item you recommend bringing to the hospital? How was your hospital experience? How long did you stay at the hospital?:
I recommend bringing a soft nightgown and robe. Hospital gowns are so rough and scratchy.
My nurses were great! Nurse Stevens was the best. She was kind, attentive and gentle. She made sure that I was well looked after.
I was in the hospital for 2 days.
How did you pass the time during recovery? Was your recovery easy? Difficult? How long before you returned to normal activities?:
I rested a lot. I watched t.v., colored in coloring books, crossword puzzles and frequent naps. I'm still recovering. The first few weeks were rough. I had a lot of pain. I started back to work this week.
What was the biggest change you had to adjust to after your hysterectomy?:
Biggest change was how I got out of bed and how I sat down or stood up.
Was your overall hysterectomy experience positive or negative? Is your health improved?:
I feel it's been a positive experience. My monthly would be due right now and not having to deal with that pain ever again is a wonderful feeling.
