Feeling like a Sissy 06-19-2004 - 10:14 AM
It's a beautiful, overcast day. The door to the sleeping porch is open and a lovely, cool breeze has been billowing in all morning. The leaves are rustling in happy, excited chatter. I don't have much to say. I wrote the following in a post op thread and figured I'd paste it here since it's an accurate reflection of my post op recovery:

"I am thirteen days post op today and feeling blue. I have been browsing all the different posts today and it seems all I see are people who said they only needed ibuprofen for the pain after their surgeries. Well, I need ibuprofen (800 mg. every 6 hours) PLUS a percocet every 4 hours. Even then, the pain does not always go away. I thought this was fairly normal, but now, after hearing from everyone else, I feel like a Sissy and a weakling.

I'm still spotting a dark yucky brown gunk and yesterday I even had a patch of fresh red blood. I get up and walk around the house but get exhausted easily. While I do feel slightly better each day, it is a slow, slow process. I hear of people up and about after three weeks, or two, or even one and feel like there's something wrong with me that all I really want to do is sleep and be left alone."

I remember reading a post from someone who said at one week she was able to take care of her 2 year old by herself with no problems. Copswife123 was out and about at three weeks and at four sounds like she's doing just fine. It doesn't help matters that my DS, "W", has been moping around all morning saying he's sad. How can I take care of his emotional needs when I can't even stay awake right now? I'm grumpy and irritable and that just makes me feel worse. I look at the calendar and see that it's already June 18th and to me it feels like it should still be June 6. Where did the time go? I'm so frustrated.

Clementine, First you are not a baby. Each of us is different to begin with, and that is a good thing. Second, we each had a slightly different proceedure -- even if it was the exact same one, we have different Doctors. Third, and this is from me personally, I am an extreamly fast healer.

So compairing your level to anyones is not good. Just like you wouldn't compare your two children.

You do have it better if you think about it. You are still in pain, and people know it so they do not mind helping. I am completely pain free and have to pleed for help with groceries...everything else I am able to do in steps so that is okay. So think of your pain as your badge of courage and strength....it IS your body healing.

Love and hugs...........Anna

Sweetie, I agree with Anna! There is no contest here as to who heals first and fastest. One thing though I would suggest is maybe checking with your doctor and let him know how you are feeling just in case. Love ya! Emily s

Clemetine,
First let me give you a BIG and send lots of your way. I agree with Anna, you are not being a baby. You are going to have some days that are better than others. I am still taking 800mg of Motrin every 6 hours and 2 Tylenol 3 every 4. Don't you worry-when your body is healed you will know it. Don't be so hard on yourself and remember that we are here for you and that we all care about you and your recovery.

Let me hear from you...

Robin

Clementine--Big s to you! Honey, I felt exactly the same way as you're feeling right now. I wondered what was wrong with me--why wasn't I recovering more quickly like some of the other sisters seemed to? We are all different. I needed pain meds for a lot longer than I was willing to admit. I didn't want to sound like a "sissy" either. Clementine, you are NOT a sissy!!! This surgery is "major." And the recuperation time is a long one.

Here I am, 21 weeks post op and I still needed a Lortab after going to Walmart today.

BTW, my legs have healed from my fall. I didn't need to take the antibiotic. Thankfully.

Please, don't be so hard on yourself, sweetie. Give your body all of the time it needs to heal properly. As others have said, we only get one chance to heal correctly. You're in my prayers. With love,~Moonchime

Go on and complain. It is good for us to be wimps sometimes. After all, we are human. After all, you are nursing, and have a little child at home. After all, you have a son with his own needs, and a husband that has needs. This might be harder on those that are stronger and expect to heal fast. When they find out they are human and need what they need. Even with the same type of surgery, the same exact nerves, muscles, organs, hormones were not disturbed. Most women I have talked to in my town that have had this done say it took up to a year to feel their old strength and stamina return. But they felt better than they had in years, and never looked back. Hang on to that! I know I will need that comment in the future. (soon in the future!)

Don't worry Clementine, you will heal up in your own time. Like the sisters said, everyone is different. My 3 year old still talks about - even tonight long-distance to my mom on the phone how I was sick and needed lotsa doctors and she and auntie came to help take care of her. That was months ago. Bleeding can last weeks too. Mine lasted
I believe 6-7. Once you heal you will be great feeling and great looking, permanently!
