Atypical Hyperplasia

Hi! I'm new...Just got my biopsy diagnosis of atypical adenomatous (complex) hyperplasia and I'll be having a vag. hysterectomy on Nov 1st. I'm 53, in the early stages of menopause, and had only slight spotting for a month as a clue to something going wrong inside. I know my doctor will remove my ovaries if frozen sections of my uterus show endometrial cancer, but I'm wondering if I should have my ovaries out no matter what. Any advice from anyone facing the same decision ? Thanks!!!!

Atypical Hyperplasia

Hi AC...we could be twins!!!

I also was diagnosed with complex endometrial hyperplasia with atypia. I chose to have both ovaries removed...I had an LAVH/BSO. My ovaries both showed evidence of stromal hyperplasia, which means they were developing the same kind of abnormality as was in my uterus. Had my ovaries remained, no doubt there would have been complications and that would have meant more surgery. Unfortunately, the only way of knowing this is to remove the ovaries and have pathology take a look; ovaries can't be biopsied without being removed.

It's a tough decision, but if you were already entering menopause, your ovaries probably aren't going much in the way of providing estrogen. I am on estrogen replacement and am doing very well. Only you can decide what's best for you. You might want to talk to your surgeon about the likelihood of hyperplasia progressing to the ovaries.

I wish you well and I wish you a speedy recovery!
