Hi Fellow Cruise Members

Just a quick check in. Didn't get my walking time improved this week. But I did manage 2 evenings for quick ones. Only totaled 68 minutes. This next week will be unsure. DH goes into the hospital Monday for surgery. Perhaps to pass the time each day I can walk the halls or the parking lot. That way I'd be sure to get SOME walking in.

I know him and he'll be a big baby (he was before). I'll have to be there every day to do for him. Men - why don't they let the nurses do their jobs? I guess he thinks because I'm a nurse I should do it for him. He's very private that way.

Scales remain stable - not moving either up or down. I'd like to drop a pound this next week. Might be difficult with eating on the run. My MIL lives right around the corner from the hospital - perhaps I can have lunch or dinner there each day. He'll be in 4 or 5 days.

Hugs to each of you for a wonderful weekend. Can you believe it's past the middle of May already?

I hope all went well with your DH's surgery Melissa, been trying to get back here sooner, life's been getting in the way LOL

I am enjoyng the new gym, yesterday I signed on for a series of personal training sessions.
After my 3 intro ones I see the benefit of having an individual program for "me"
Excited about getting started, no getting bored anymore.
They have a breakfast bar there so I'm planning on doing some early workouts, I'm up at 4.30 to get DH off to work so I'll just go there , do a workout, shower and breakie than off to work.
Like you Mel i haven't seen any mpvement on the scales yet but I'm hopeful, gotta be hopeful right??

hoping that everyone else are smooth sailing or at least keeping heads above the water!!!

Hi Wendy and the rest of you cruisers!

Wendy, hopefull is sounding great to me!!

DH made out well today. Surgery was a bit late but he made it thru 3.5 hrs very well. Surgeon came out and sat with me in the waiting room (DH's sis and I were only people left there, lol). He was one tired guy - one big case after another today. Great surgeon - I love him. He took great care of DH. Did the revision and several repairs he didn't think he'd have to do. But at least its done.

Food today was good considering. Only snacks I had were pretzels (mini ones - one serving) for my lunch. I got to have dinner at MIL's as she lives only about 1.5 miles from hospital. Makes it convienent.

Doctor recommended not only walking but also swimming for DH's rehab (well after incision closes). We have an above ground pool, but it's got to warm up a LOT before I can open it. Then we'll have to see what we can do about a gym w/pool when summer ends and I close our pool? Dh works nights and days are not available at our schools pool (open to residents for small fee) when school is in session. But it will work out. I"m already planning on buying that treadmill that DH has refused me so far - he has no choice now.

Off to bed - I'm brain dead at this point. Hugs to all - hoping that scales remain the same or in a downword direction for you.

Melissa

Hi Gals, Hope all is well with everyone. According to my weight watchers scales I have lost 1.6 lbs. ( total--13 lbs. ) My effort for the past week felt like more than 1.6 lbs. I seriously need to walk more Last week I felt busy with house cleaning and errands, etc. then worked my three 12 hour shifts in the ER Sat, Sun, Mon. We have a few appointments this week and my son's high school graduation to attend ( he's only 15 ). The week is already so full, I know I won't walk unless I make an appointment to walk. LOL. Life will go on ( and on ) as usual. I don't suppose there will ever be a time when it's convenient to exercise/improve diet. This is the rest of my life. I sure do miss the days of being able to lose weight quickly ( but I never kept it off ). I have lost as much as 30, 40, even 50 lbs one time ( never got below 200 though ). The weight that I am losing this time ( as slow as it may be ), I hope I never see it again. I have lost the same pounds over and over. On a more positive note--my fasting blood sugars have improved. I'm really trying to avoid meds for my blood sugar as I already take enough for my blood pressure. I NEED A BOOST. I'm really losing momentum ( and I've only been doing this for 5 weeks ). Someone tell me to quit whining and hang in there. Time for me to get ready for my doctor's appointment. Maybe she won't fuss too much about my weight, labs, etc. Love and hugs to all, Dorsey

OK - quit whining Dorsey and hang in there. How's that? We all get so tired of watching what we put into our mouths. I think sometimes that we need to re-wire our brains and make it simply a "habit" to eat healthy. If it becomes habit then we won't resist it so much? I haven't got it down pat yet obviously.

Your doing so well. With summer comming we can try the fresh veggies, BBQ some new dishes to make life more interesting and varied in our foods. Always fun to try something new - if only once per week.

Off to hospital to spend the day with DH. Take care all - I hope to check in later tonight.

Hi, hope everyone is well. I lost a pound last week and am so glad to see the scale go in that direction I know I could have done even better with the eating but I don't want to feel so hungry all the time and a pound a week is good enough for me. I don't think I've weighed less than I do now in my whole adult life!!
I've been exercising for one hour 6 days a week and while I don't always want to I always feel better afterward. I did walk 480 minutes last week but it will be less this week since the weather has been rainy and couldn't get out to golf as much. If I don't walk the golf course I do an hour DVD (Biggest Loser, Richard Simmons or Walk Away the Pounds.)
Dorsey hang in there, don't lose your motivation to get healthy for you. That is my primary goal to get to my goal weight and keep it there. When I started this in 2005 I just decided that I was going to do this and stopped trying and started doing!! I do it for me.
Melissa hope your DH gets well soon.
I'll check in again soon. Lorri

Hi Everyone

DH is home, I'm exhaused. How'd I even handle a full load of 1/2 a floor on night shift when I can't keep up with one DH? They are such babies!

Scales are down at 170. Only 4 lbs to go to get back to my lowest of 166. And only 10 to go to get to surgeons goal wt for me. Wonder if I'll make it? With the up/down/in/out for DH I'll be there by next week. LOL Food could be better - I'm not eating or eating on the run and I have to sit down and eat to get good benefit. Things should settle down in a day or two. We just have to get into a routine. Thanks for letting me vent.

Hope to check in later. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend to those celebrating.

Remember those who gave their lives so we can live in freedom.

Hugs,
Melissa

Hello Ladies, I'm feeling pretty good right now, I just came home from the park and walked 30 minutes . It really did help my mood . I needed a boost, I gained 2 lbs this past week. Briefly, this is what happened: busy week last week with appointments, had a dental procedure and was instructed to eat soft food or any food that I could cut and put in the back of my mouth, I did not count weight watchers points due to being so busy and the diet alteration. Well, apparently I found a lot of soft food and did not walk any, so there you go---the scales went up 2 lbs . Also, lab results in---fasting blood sugar 132 ( a little high according to our lab ), total cholesterol 187 ( need to work on the good and the bad ), hemoglobin A1C 7.4 ( our lab says normal is up to 6 ). So, what do you gals think? Will my MD want to start me on blood sugar meds? I told her about my weight watchers diet and that I had lost 10 to 12 lbs ( this conversation was before the lab was done ). She gave me the health speech, told me to watch the yo-yo ing, said I would ruin my metabolism . So far no call from the MD office regarding my labs ( I know the results because I had it done where I work ). Do any of you take meds for blood sugar control and at what point was that decided? . Grateful for anyone that can share their experience with blood sugar issues. Despite the past week I feel pretty good, that walk must have really helped . How is everyone holding up? Love you gals!

Dorsey - Normal blood sugars should fall between 60 and 100 (some docs use 120 but not too often any longer). A1C shows the trend over weeks and months. The "new normal" is 6.0. Personally I feel that's a bit low especially for a diabetic. Very very tight control. Little room to allow for drops in blood sugar. But I'm not the doctor. Sometimes I think doctors use this A1C as a short cut, but it is very accurate for tracking trends in blood sugar. They used to do 3 fastings - a month apart. But not all doctors still do this. Ask your doctor if you can attempt to get the blood sugar down thru DIET if possible BEFORE taking meds. See what they say - can't hurt. The A1C will tell the tale. It takes 3 months to register a change. \
As for the cholesterole. Below 200 is good. Closer to 150 is better. I got mine down to 196 for the 1st time in over 15 yrs and I'm happy. I did it thru eating oatmeal every morning. It worked. From 235? to 196 in about 3 months. I still keep up with the oatmeal but have an egg occasionally.

With your wt loss and paying attention to your other labs - you are on your way! Good for you!!

I've been MIA due to DH having surgery. I can't get here often these days. That should improve now that DH is home - I'll try anyway. But I'm thinking of you. Can someone pick a name for the new month? Post the thread on June 1st with the link here tomorrow? Here's to continuing our cruise into better health!

Hugs to all - Melissa
