Questions before LSH

Hi everyone,
I'm getting more and more nervous.
I notice some people have to do bowel prep before their hysterectomy and some don't. In what situations does this have to be done?
Is it best to use oversized panties or the kind that would be below where the incisions will be?
I will be having an LSH and my preop appointment is tomorrow. Surgery is scheduled for Sept. 16.
I'm also wondering,is it a good idea to take pajamas or a gown to he hospital or do they have you wear the hospital gowns they have the whole time? I will be at the hospital at least one night.

Questions before LSH

Hi bkh,

I am also have surgery the 16th. My nerves have been a mess this last week as well. I am having a TAH/BSO with no bowel prep required. The nurse did mention it might help to give myself an enema night before surgery, but not required. Also she mentioned eating light the day or two before surgery. Soft foods...

I did have large abdominal bikini cut many years ago. I recall the big girl (above incision) panties to work the best. They were the most comfy for me.

Best wishes and a quick recovery for you.

Questions before LSH

Hi BKH and Happy Ending I too am scheduled for TAH on Sept 18th. I'm nervous as well although feeling so awful am sort of looking forward to it.

I saw my gynacologist last week and he did not mention any bowel prep either.

How long will your hospital stay be? I was told 5 days, longer if needed! Not sure I could last that long in hospital. I'm a nurse and don't think I'd make a good patient. lol.

My doctor likes to keep his patients 3-5 days, but unfortunately insurance only pays for 48 hours. If they find that the patient is in distress, the doctor can request an extra day...oh boy. Crazy how different doctors, hospitals and insurances cover so differently, when the same surgery is being performed.

Good luck with your surgery and wish you a speedy recovery.

Questions before LSH

Hi Happy Ending,

I'm sure you'll have a problem free recovery so will all be okay but that is really rubbish with your health insurance.

I'm in Australia and think our private health insurance system is obviously very different. No time limit it would usually be the hospital kicking you out because they need the bed for a new admission.

Will you have someone at home to take care of you - especially for at least the first 7-10 days?

All the best

Questions before LSH

I had an LAVH, which I think has the same type of small incisions as a an LSH and I wore bikini panties 1 size larger than normal. I know that most of the ladies here recommend "granny panties", but I can't stand the way those feel and since I didn't have an abdominal incision, there was no issue with the upper band rubbing. They were the most comfortable for me because when my belly would swell a bit, there was nothing holding it back. I need to add, though, that I wore the hospital's mesh panties for the first week--they were like wearing nothing at all and super comfortable. I even asked for a couple extra pair so I wouldn't have to wash them.

The hospital gown, IMHO, is the very best choice. Save your pretty gowns for home because there are all kinds of possibilities for getting them soiled in the castle and it's much easier to let someone else do the laundry. Best wishes and hugs for your upcoming surgery--the waiting truly IS the worst part!

Questions before LSH

i had to do a bowel prep before my lsh. you might find out today at your pre-op that you have to do one. its really not bad at all.
i prefer a pair of comfortable sleep pants and a tank top to the hospital gown. a nurse helped me change as soon as i felt up to it.
good luck with your surgery..i wish you as easy of a recovery as i had

Questions before LSH

Good Luck on your up coming surgery! I brought an over sized night shirt that never left my bag. I also had over sized panties that I didn't wear till I went home. As far as a bowel prep, My Dr said there was no need and he could work around everything inside. However after reading all the posts months before my surgery I chose to take a laxative a couple days prior to surgery. I ate light for 2 days before going to the castle, and I had very little gas, and felt great and HUNGRY a couple hours after surgery. So Hope this helped. Your very normal for having questions....I sure did. But I'll tell you I feel sooooo great. Have not had a period in 5 months, and i DON'T miss it at ALL!!!!

Best wishes...

Questions before LSH

I was totally freaked out the 2 days before my LSH on 8/26. Had to do the bowel prep the night before, it's not that bad. I was hungry the next morning though. My surgery went well and I went home the next day. I didn't bring my own gown to the hospital and it turned out the one they gave was pretty nice. The hospital did a really good job of pampering me. I didn't have any discomfort after I awoke. They took the IV and catheter out the next morning and I peed on my own. I had only minimal discomfort and was able to control it with Ibruprofen. The waiting is really the hardest part. Anticipating the unknown I guess. It all went really smoothly for me.

Questions before LSH

Hi Bkh,

I also had a LSH. I did not have a bowel prep before my hyst. My Dr. just advised me to have a cleaning out the day before, if possible..and I did.

I had my LSH at an outpatient center so I did not take overnight P.J's. And like other ladies suggested..take some of your own thngs if you are staying overnight. On underwear when I got home...I actually wore the high-waisted bikini underwear and it worked great.

Best wishes~

Mary
