Ovulation Pain Post Hyster?- Is Anyone Experiencing it?

I am wondering if anyone has experienced pain the in ovaries when ovulating post op?

I had a TVH (Kept Ovaries) April 22 09. This last month I experienced pain on my left ovary just like I had for years pre-op. I know the doctor didn't remove the ovaries, but what causes the pain? and do your ovaries swell? It feels like my abdomin swells during ovulation. Any help you can give me is appreciated. I just don't understand what is going on in there since the uterus and cervix is gone.

Re: Ovulation Pain Post Hyster?- Is Anyone Experiencing it?

Hi Apple, I too had that same feeling in my right side this past week. I had a LAVH and also kept my ovaries, but I was on a continual dose of birth control for the past six years, thus I missed out on having periods all together, I almost forgot what it felt like, until I had that pain in my side. Mine lasted on and off during the day, but went away within 24hrs. Good question

Your ovaries will still release until you are through menopause, so that feeling can be what it feels like.

since you kept your ovaries and will still ovulate, you can/will get all the symptoms of ovulation.

Re: Ovulation Pain Post Hyster?- Is Anyone Experiencing it?

The occasional pain I experience with ovulation (every 2-3 months or so) hasn't changed at all post-hysterectomy, but then again, I guess I didn't expect it to since they're the same ovaries I had before! There are many theories as to why it hurts, but no consensus. The most plausible explanation I've heard is that a bit of blood is released into the pelvis when ovulation occurs. Free blood in the pelvis is extremely irritating to tissue and so this might be what causes the pain as well as the bloating/swelling.

Ampyali - Thanks for the explanation. I have learned so much from all the ladies on this website. I noticed you are one year post-op.....how are things going for you? Do you have any residual affects from the surgery? My recovering has been pretty good. The only thing that is bothering me is when I lift heavier objects, I get achy in the vaginal area. I figure I'm still healing OR I have to strengthen those muscles again. Have a great day.

Re: Ovulation Pain Post Hyster?- Is Anyone Experiencing it?

Thanks for asking--I'm getting ready to celebrate one year post-op because I feel SO fantastic! I was in pain for so long before my surgery and the surgery and this year have been such a blessing. I still had a few little aches and twinges up until about 2 months ago, especially when running and when lifting heavy stuff. Also, I noticed up until that time that if I went really crazy with my activity level for several days in a row, I would have a day when I felt a little pooped out. I try to remember to do my Kegals while I'm lifting weights at the gym--it seems to be working cause I'm noticing increased muscle tone down there. Best wishes to you!
