In Praise of Bowel Prep

I cursed my doctor under my breath as I drank Milk of Magnesia for two days and endured a day's clear liquid diet. Day 2 of MOM was supposed to be my last day of work, that was until I woke up to MOM explosions and spent the day on the throne. My LAVH was scheduled for noon so "nothing after midnight" was more punishing than usual--it added up to 1.5 days with diet cokes or coffee. The headache the day of surgery was mammoth.

Now for the "Praise"...my procedure unexpectedly turned into a TAH because the fibroids were cantaloupe and softball size. I had the gas injected for the laproscopic procedure before the doc realized the large fibroid sizes. The combination of the gas and the abdomenal incision made pooting and pooping painful processes. I was SO glad not to have a full digestive system. Every time I tried to go to the bathroom, I kept reminding myself "there's not much in there, so this won't be so bad." And it wasn't.

The first "go" was a while in happening, but in the evening on day two, I was able to make a deposit in the National Bank of Bowel Relief.

As much as I cursed the doctor prior to my surgery, I praised her 10 times as often afterwards.

Here's to an empty colon! Drink up sisters!

In my case, they had to cut my intestines because my utereus & ovaries adhered to my intestines. If I had not cleared my bowels I would have a colostomy today!
