Can Depo Provera cause endometriosis?

I have always wondered if my endomertrosis and adenomyosis was caused due to me taking the birthcontrol depo provera shot or that I had a retained placenta. I've asked several doctors they all say not likely but I still wonder has anyone else had these problems.

I agree with your doctors. Rather than causing or contributing to the conditions, Depo Provera is actually a treatment option for both endometriosis and adenomyosis. If anything, the Depo Provera may have prevent both conditions from being any worse than they were.

Re: Can Depo Provera cause endometriosis?

I took Depo Provera for 14 yrs to help control the symptoms of the endo. It kept most of it at bay. I had cervical displasia in 2008 and it returned this year. I finally chose a hyster as a preventive on that turning to cancer. The endo was being controlled by the Depo so well that my Doc said I might actually make menopause and be "cured". Well cured as much as possible I guess.

Re: Can Depo Provera cause endometriosis?

I suspect Depo Provera triggered or worsened my endo. I had some endo-type problems right when I started my period, but once I got on BC, it was mostly under control, and was never diagnosed. I even went hormone-free for a while, using a diaphragm for BC, but then I decided to try Depo Provera, and it did not agree with me at all.

I gained 40 pounds (helped along by bad habits), had ridiculous water retention (would "gain" 5+ pounds over the course of a day) and it worked as BC in the most fundamental sense, ie. it made me not want to have sex, and when I did, I didn't enjoy it at all. I only took 3 shots (so 9 months), then quit.

So I went off it, and that's when my endo issues started, along with severe PMS, which was eventually diagnosed as PMDD. Within a year of going off Depo Provera, I was at the psychiatric hospitals PMS center and seeing an endo specialist for my first surgery.

It could be coincidence.... but it seems like it must be related somehow, at least in my case.

There could be a connection in that it could have allowed what endometriosis you had to shrink. Then when you stopped using the Depo Provera, the endometriosis plumped back up again. Throw in a lot of hormonal imbalance as your body adjusted to not have the Depo Provera any more and you ended up with your host of symptoms!

Re: Can Depo Provera cause endometriosis?

I have been concerned about the same thing.

I took Depo Provera for about 5 years before getting the severe abdominal pain that was eventually diagnosed as Endometriosis.

In fact, I ended up in the hospital soon after my last shot. None of my doctors has ever mentioned a link, and I doubt they will until/unless it is published.

It is frustrating to suffer from such a condition with no explanation as to the cause . I am sure you all can identify...

The only link is that progesterone or progestin is a treatment option for endometriosis. Depo Provera does not in any way cause endometriosis.

Here are some articles about progesterone/progestin and endo:
