Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

Now what??? I called the number yesterday, they told me to speak to my physican, that they had mailed out notices to all physicians and pharmacies. Well I called my pharmacist and asked them if they had heard anything yet, they said no.
So naturally I called my GYN and asked her about it, and what we should do now since she had just bumped me up from HS to Full Strength recently and she hadnt heard yet either.
The person at Solvay said there should be enough floating around to last a few more months but after that, that would be it..
This really concerns me.. Anyone else take Estratest and find this as bothersome as I do????

Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to Discontinue Supplying

the marketplace with ESTRATEST® (Esterified Estrogens and Methyltestosterone) Tablets and
ESTRATEST® HS (Esterified Estrogens and Methyltestosterone) Tablets. Effective March 31,
2009, the company will no longer accept orders for new product from its customers.

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

I don't use Estratest, but this really sucks, doesn't it? I've been reading for years that the FDA was not happy with Estratest since testosterone is not "officially" required by women in menopause. Anyway, the question is what to do if you are one of the contented Estratest users.

The estrogen in Estratest is esterified estrogens, 1.25 mg in the full strength and 0.625 in the HS. There is 2.5 and 1.25 mg of methyltestosterone in each, too. You could replace the estrogen with Ogen or Menest, both are similar estrogens. There are methyltestosterone pills in strengths for men which would be way too much for a woman, but maybe your Dr could prescribe a compounded cream to replace that part.

Hope you can find something you can live with.

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

Ive been looking at one called EEMT made by Breckenridge that has esterified estrogens and Methyltestosterones..
I think it is almost comparable or close to it.. Im going to ask my MD about it and get her thoughts on it...

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

After using Estratest for around a year after I first started HRT six years ago, I switched to a generic version of Estratest ((EEMT) and have used it for over four years and I can't tell the difference. My pharmacist explained to me that it's the same medication, just manufactured by a different company.

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

I'm so glad to hear about the generic...I am freaking out, too. My gyno just told me that Estratest HS is being discontinued and I only started about 6 months ago. I have felt better in the past 6 months than I have in years and I don't want to lose my libido again!

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

When I had my hysterectomy in February 2007, I first went on Estratest. When the generic came out, I quickly switched to it due to it being obviously cheaper. Today I just tried to renew my perscription and also found out the same news as you all did but was then told that even the generic was unavailable!!!!! But.....came to find out that this is NOT true. While Estratest has been discontinued, the generic is still out there. It's just harder to get due to the demand being higher at the moment than the supply (obviously because Estratest is no longer in the picture). My pharmacist also just found yet another generic maker of this drug, which she'll be giving me. So ladies, we are okay. There are a couple of generic choices out there for those of us who are doing wonderfully on Estratest. Rejoice!

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

I'm upset for you. Even though I don't take Estratest (it was too much testosterone for me) I know that when something works, it's scary to have to start over finding that perfect medication for you. I hope you can get the generic like Bizet woman uses.

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

I also have been taking Estratest for the last 5 years and was panic stricken when I went to my pharmacy to pick it up Saturday only to find out they did not have it. They had to call around and found it in another city. As I was out completely and would start flashing soon, I had to drive to get the last month supply they had. I am really upset and not sure what to do. I tried the generic before and did not do as well as on actual Estratest. I would really like to go off them all together but still am only 48 and have no ovaries. I forgot to take the first pill of the month yesterday and ended up with a migraine and hot flashes all ready, by only missing one day! Last time I tried to stop taking them I had hot flashes every 15 minutes, major vaginal dryness where I would bleed when using TP, and had major insomnia. Still have the insomnia problem. Any advice?

Re: Estratest stopped being manufactured.. Now what??!!

Ive been going back and forth with hormones made in a compound pharmacy for the last few months. My GYN swore they could make something almost identical to the Estratest I was taking. So far, nothing has worked like Estratest worked. Either too much testosterone and my face breaks out worse than a teenagers, or not enough something and my libido moved out.. It's just totally frustrating to have something that works so well and then have it just taken away due to a "business" decision. Let's see them to that to Viagra and see what kind of reaction it would cause..
And this last go around, I got an entirely DIFFERENT type of estrogen (I cant ever remember which kind is what) but it made me want to jump out of my skin and rip someone's head off.. EEEKKK!!! Needless to say, that didnt work..
Not to mention, it's almost 4am and Im STILL awake and have to be up in 2.5 hours to get my son ready for school. Sleep is almost impossible anymore.. My hair looks awful.. I could just continue on and on but I will save ya'll the misery, Im sure you know what Im talking about.. lol
Im all ears for suggestions. I spoke to my doc about EEMT but dont know WHY he didnt go with it.. He had never had any dealings with it and wasnt familiar with it, so that may be why is my only guess..
