Question - Climara Patch and Spironolactone Climara Patch and Spironolactone

I have been on spironolactone for just over a year for hormonal acne. I am now 3 weeks post op for total hysterectomy. Just turned 50 and elected to have HT after surgery. I was put on climara patch .1 at the hospital. Everything seems good, but wonder if I need to continue the spironolactone? I had multiple cyst and a benign tumor on ovaries and don't know if that effected anything.

Re: Climara Patch and Spironolactone

Hi goldie5 Were you ever diagnosed with PCOS? Spironolactone is often prescribed for symptoms of too much androgen in women with PCOS (the multiple cysts are another symptom).

PCOS is a disease of the entire endocrine system, not just the ovaries, so if you had PCOS before, you still have it. Whether or not you still need the spironolactone would depend on how well the Climara is balancing the testosterone your body is making. You might want to consult an endocrinologist for advice on this one.

Re: Climara Patch and Spironolactone

I was put on spironolactone by my dermatologist to try to clear up my acne because nothing else had worked and she did not want to use Accutane because of my age and cholesterol level. My OB-GYN knows I'm taking it and why, but did not comment about it. I will see him for my 6 wk post-op and will ask then. I worry if I get off of it everything will change-my face may start breaking out again and my hormones might need re-adjusting.
