GYN/Oncologist?

My question is, how do you know when you need to see a GYN/Oncologist. In 2006 I had cervical cancer caused by HPV in 2006, had Colpo, LEEP and TVH-BOS and since then have had normal pap's with no positive HPV test once a year. No follow up care other than routine pap's. Now I have an abnormal pap with return of HPV and go for colpo tomorrow. Should I consult with an oncologist? I'm feeling overwhelmed with this new result and my new Gyn (had a change of insurance thus the new doc) seems surprised when I didn't have radiation in 06. Input from others would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks, I sure love this site and the women survivors on it!

Re: GYN/Oncologist?

If you have a GYN cancer or near-cancer, see a GYN oncologist. I wish I'd insisted on seeing one right off instead of at a later date. OB-GYN's just do not have the specific cancer expertise a GYN onc does. I know its stressful but better to get it right as soon as you can. Sending hugs.

Re: GYN/Oncologist?

You should have seen a gyn/onco when cancer was first suspected. Who did the hyster? Were you given a stage? (usually cin or insitu, or a number/letter/number like 1a1,1b1, etc)

I was dx in 2006 with 1b1 and was immediately sent to a gyn/onco for surgery, post-op treatments, and she's been the one I will stick with from here on out as well. Normally patients are released back to the ob/gyn after 5 years, but I already told her I don't want to go back LOL

Re: GYN/Oncologist?

Hi - Sorry you're having to deal with HPV again! I wish you well!

I live in a small town in northern MN; the nearest gyn/onc is in Minneapolis -- 4 hours away from me. Even large hospitals in Duluth and Fargo (2-3 hours from me) don't have gyn/oncs; therefore, many women who live in my town see a gyn and an onc (two doctors) rather than taking the four hour trip for appts and treatment.

It's best to go to a gyn/onc; they're the experts, but for some women, that's not possible. I was so fortunate to have good insurance and the ability to continue working even though I was far from home for the radiation treatments. Not all women are as fortunate, but they should be!!!

See a gyn/onc if you can!!! Best to you!

Re: GYN/Oncologist?

Let me say again that I love this site and the women on it. I made a phone call today and actually got a return call from the local cancer center. The nurse who called me works with the gyn/oncologist when they visit the center once a month. She reassured me that my current doctor is doing the right thing with the colpo and that I should keep my appt tomorrow. She stated the gyn/oncologist actually works one day a month in the same clinic as my doctor and she felt sure he would refer me to that gyn/onc once the colpo returns. She said she understood my concerns and how she faced some of the same problems with her teenage daughter when she was dx with dysplsia due to HPV, I belileve that God gave me the right directions when I returned to hystersisters, and when I picked up with phone today. I feel so much better, for one the waiting for the coplo is almost over; this site and the phone call from the local cancer center made me feel buch better, not to mention I had to change doctors when my insurance changed, I'm in better hands now.
Thanks ladies!
