Re: Anyone else having problems with depression and other mood issues since hysterect

Sisters, you are not alone in this...

I had my TAH last July and I take Black Cohosh for the hot flashes, etc and it has helped until the past 2 months...

I have noticed since surgery the lethargy (which I felt was from the surgery itself, but shouldn't that be done by now?) and the mood swings from being ok to being really down and crying easily (again, I thought this might be from some residual monthly cycle thing my body was holding onto, but again, shouldn't this be done by now?).

This past week, I hit a wall. I realized that when I got to work, the only thing I wanted to do was go home, go back to sleep and not wake up. This was bad. I cried and then couldn't stop. Luckily, I have an understanding boss who sent me home and told me to go to my doctor. I cried on and off for two days. I got to my doctor who prescribed a new anti-depressant and so far so good. I cannot remember the name of it, but when I do, I will let you know.

My best advice...doctors are supposed to help us. Go out and get the help you deserve!

Yes, the crying easily is a sign of low estrogen. I start that when mine gets even a little low.

and the uti's are for me as well. Perhaps a little big of vaginal estrogen would help with this point.

I don't see any way to get through the emotional issues without an anti-depressant altho I did have good luck with taking 7 keto this winter and if I did decide to go off everything I will try that first and see if it countereffects the crying and emotional issues that come along when I stop.

Well I have not been on this site since Jan before my surgery in 2009. I had a complete hysterectomy in Feb 2009 and took no HRT whatsoever.. I had some mile night sweats/hot flashes but nothing to shake a hat at. Move forward to late 2011 and well I think I have depleted my storage of hormones, yeah I cry at the drop of the hat, major mood fluctuations. You are not alone, it just took me awhile to catch up with the class

Re: Anyone else having problems with depression and other mood issues since hysterect

Today is my 2 year hysterversary as they call it. I'm not the type to talk about the complications and problems I've had, but I can answer a few things from the standpoint of being further out from surgery than you are. I found that immediately after my surgeries I got a lot of help and support from others who had been through the same thing. My Dr said I wouldn't be able to take HRT due to the type of cancer I had either , I'm 54. I know exactly what you mean about the mood changes. I notice that a hot flash follows my mood drops. Have you noticed that? My dr said specific antidepressants help with that, but I haven't tried. I cried more during the first year than I had probably cried in the previous 40, but it's been less this second year. It doesn't last as long either. You do get more used to it. It's not a feeling you can explain, but I do know what you mean. It makes you feel very alone as you're going through it, I know. I'm sorry that you are fighting it too. At times the mental and physical exhaustion can take over. I think it will get better, but I can't promise when. You are 6 months out and I think when you look back in 6 more months, you will see some improvement. Hang in there if you can, but if you are feeling you can't, please look into the antidepressants. Please reach out again if you still have concerns.

Re: Anyone else having problems with depression and other mood issues since hysterect

I had my TAH Oct 2011, and depression is setting in as well. I would consider taking an antidepressant temporarily. I have never taken them before. I am not willing to spend a whole bunch of time experimenting with supplements until I find one that works. I just want the temporary help for now. Can anyone suggest an antidepressant that I won't get dependent on.

My Dr said Effexor ER has shown to help women in this situation and some feel the generic is even better. I haven't tried it, but that is the next step if I want to, so maybe you could think about that.

Try going to sleep by 930, not watching tv or going online right before sleep. I also take melatonin spray from the health food store- it really works. Lavender chamomile tea also helps me sleep better, 100percent cotton pillow cases help keep me cool. These minor changes can help.

A walk or a jog outside really helps with feeling down. But u have to really give yourself a push to get up and go.
