Re: Pain control

My Dr gave my Ibuprofen also, and told me to take it regardless if I need it or not, becasue it will help with the swelling. I just can't imagine having this type of surgery and being painfree......but thats what I am praying for.

I praying for that for you as well I know everyone is different so I can only speak to my surgery , the worst I have had is discomfort and tht was mostly from the gas. I have not had any pain that was even close to the cramps I used to experience. Try to walk around the house and use the breathing apparatus that they give you after surgery both things really help with the gas. I spent time in the recliner with a heating pad on my back and ice on my tummy the first week but I was also out for breakfast and little shopping trips

Re: Pain control

I had Total DaVinci , kept ovaries, and was on the IV pain pump for 24 hours and they needed to up my dose twice as well as percocets orally. I needed percocet at home for 3 weeks.I'm surprised your doctors are telling you with DaVinci you don't need pain medicine in the hospital. Your having the same work done inside as the other surgery types. Nerves , blood vessels, and ligaments are being severed , stitched and or cauterized and you have internal vaginal stitches if you lose your cervix and get a vaginal cuff also. Not needing pain medication after the initial surgery medications wear off would be very lucky for a few, but I don't think it is the norm.

Re: Pain control

Hi There,

I had DaVinci May 3rd. Please do not work yourself into a pre-surgery freak out. I am generally a very wimpy person. I woke up around 1 PM post surgery. I asked for pain meds, not because I was in pain, but because I kept waiting for the pain to arrive that never did. I was uncomfortable, but not in pain whatsoever. She told me around 3 she woudl take out the catheter and I was "going to get up and walk around". I thought she was crazy, but I did it just fine. Around dinner time Dr. came in and told me I could go home, but I had already sent hubby home. I was still waiting for the pain to kick in, thinking I must still have meds and anesthesia going on, so I asked to stay. I was afraid that meds might wear off on the way home and/or I woudl have trouble getting up the stairs at home (where the potty is). My only issue was that I was not tired - at all (anesthesia side-effect?). I asked for pain med and or sleeping aid - but nothing worked. I was literally up all night watching tv. No biggie, I used it to my advantage. I would watch a show then get up and walk the hall - I figured the longer I lay, the harder it woudl be to get up. I left teh hosp around noon. Dr. gave me a prescrip for Vicoden, which I never had to have filled. I slept from 1 PM until dinner, got up and ate, then slept the whole night never waking once. I took Motrin a couple times during the day and Tylenol PM to sleep the first couple nights, only because I wanted to get some good sleep. All my pain was 100% bearable. I am week 3 now and still no where near 100%. I do tire easily. Riding in the car more than a couple miles, bending over too much and sitting up from laying on the couch later in the day are my tough issues. Not looking forward to going back to work next Tuesday after Memorial Day, but the doctor only normally give 2 weeks. He said he was "feeling generous" and signed me another week or short term disability. I thought that was kind of cold. I woudl really like to take 1 more week, if I had my way.

Dolfenn will be receiving pain medication in the hospital. Her doctor stated she won't need the iv pain pump for administering medication. I'm sure her doctor will be certain she isn't in pain.

Re: Pain control

I had a morphine drip with a button after my first c-section. It was horrid. I could press the button every 6 minutes, and boy did I need to and darned if it didn't seem to help one bit.

After my DvH, the nurses would shoot a shot of Toradol in my IV every 6 hours and it was wonderful. It controled the pain way better than the morphine pump did and each dose lasted a long time. The first 6 hours are when the pain is the worst, after that, I did just fine with ibuprofen and I needed narcotics for 2 weeks following each of my c-sections.
