Ablation and lap; Recovering

I cannot get out of bed or walk unassisted. Sitting is agonizing (which makes trying to eat anything quite difficult) --lying flat on my back with a pillow under my feet is the only comfortable position I can find. My husband has to leave for a few hours later today--I was going to go with him but at this point that is out of the question. I was NOT prepared at all for this. I figured I would be in some pain, but had no idea it would be this excruciating! Anyone else feel this way after ablation? If so, how long before you felt better? I was so looking forward to being better and now I feel worse than I ever have before :*(
I had my ablation done Oct 2010. My pain stopped May 17th 2012. I had excruciating pain from day one from the ablation and it never stopped. I truly hope yours doesn't turn out like mine did. Just rest and take it east for a few days. Hopefully it passes soon for you.

Re: Ablation and lap; Recovering

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis Dee, I hope that you and your medical team are able to find a solution that works for you. Thank you all so much for your feedback, advice and kind words, I can't put into words what it means to me. You ladies are all so wonderful, and I wish the best to each and every one of you.

I've spent the entire day in bed today, aside from one attempt to go downstairs to help my husband clean up a bit--big mistake. Apparently I'm stubborn. Been popping Percocet religiously every 4 hours. I hate pain meds, but don't dare go off them yet, I can really tell about 30-45 minutes before I'm due for another one that the cramps start increasing in intensity. The back pain has been awful, thankfully I still have a few heat wraps left.

I agree that oft times doctors are not realistic--or at least not as forthcoming as they perhaps should be--concerning the aftermath of surgical procedures. Afterwards when I was writhing around in agony, the nurse told me that it was not uncommon to be in a lot of pain after ablation (she also told me it would very suddenly disappear within 24 hours, which it hasn't), I wish they would have said something to prepare me for it. All I was told was that I could possibly get "a bit crampy". Guess we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Ablation and lap; Recovering

I got my period the day before I went in. I've had a bit of spotting here and there but that's it. The cramps and back pain are just so awful. I'm starting to get pain in my shoulders again, I assume from the gas. Thought that would be gone by now, but I suppose, I've done very little walking. I will try to do a bit more walking today.

I missed a dose of Percocet early this morning because I was sleeping and missing that one dose has really made a difference. I hate this, this isn't me. I hate taking 1 pain pill, much less needing them on a set schedule. It's only been 2 days so I suppose this is not abnormal (?), it just seems like it's been a lot longer. I asked the nurse in ICU if she thought the fact that I had my period had anything to do with the horrible cramps I was having--she said no.

Thanks again everyone for listening, you're all a huge part of my recovery, and many others as well, I'm sure. Sorry my posts have been so long and rambling of late.

Re: Ablation and lap; Recovering

So 4 days out now, and have a few more questions. Hope y'all aren't getting too tired of hearing from me For the past few hours I've been having this odd sensation in the incision in my belly button--I can't really figure out a way to explain it, it kinda feels like something is puncturing my belly button, then it shoots down into my vagina. This happens while lying perfectly still, so I don't believe it's an effect of strain on the incision or stitches. Anyone else had this or know what it could be?

Also, I've yet to have a bowel movement. I'm normally very regular, once, sometimes twice a day, aside from bouts of diarrhea when I have my period. I've taken some dulcolax (just the stool softener, not the laxative) each day since I got home, but so far nothing. I'm going to pick up some prunes tomorrow and continue to drink a lot of water. Is this normal? Should I contact my doctor on Monday? Sorry for so many dumb questions, and thanks again everyone

Re: Ablation and lap; Recovering

I would get some Metamucil and start to take that for a week or so. I didn't have a normal reaction to the ablation, so I am nor sure. It doesn't sound like my recovery. I didn't need the painkillers...but everyone is different. Call your Dr on Monday and ask your questions...it won't hurt to ask. Hope you begin to feel better soon!

Re: Ablation and lap; Recovering

Hi Regan. You made me register today instead of just reading, like I've been doing for months, so I could reply to you.

I hope you're feeling better!

I'm 4 weeks today post-op and had the exact same procedures/surgeries you had. The pain was insane for the first 4 or 5 days. My first post-op was 2 weeks and 1 day after the surgery. My doctor removed a couple stitches and said hmmm the bleeding should've stopped by now call if it doesn't stop in a week or so. It stopped the next day and started up again 24 hours later.

I called yesterday and said I'm 4 weeks post-op tomorrow and still bleeding. I'm in a lot of pain - horrible cramps and low-back. Clots and everything, just like before, only it's been pretty much going on for four weeks instead of my normal 7-10 days. I was told to go in today. The doctor said my results are "very unusual" and ordered another ultrasound and more blood work. She put me on antibiotics because things are still really tender down there and progesterone to try to stop the bleeding.

My boyfriend has been incredibly supportive, mostly because my family has been very absent. He's about fed up though. All he can say now is what a waste of time and money it all was when I obviously needed a hysterectomy in the first place.

So I know I'm a little late in responding - but I feel your pain.

Re: Ablation and lap; Recovering

Knitgeek, I'm so sorry things are going so badly for you right now, and hope that you will get some relief soon. I think you'll get some great advice on the site, I sure have--and you will definitely find compassion and understanding

I have really not had any issues with bleeding since having the ablation, very little pink spotting and a small amount of watery discharge. It almost seemed surreal, coming home and not bleeding like mad. I had my period the day I went in for the ablation and very quickly bled through the 2 pads I'd brought along (I was supposed to get into the OR much earlier than I did). I did have a surly nurse grouch at me for wearing my underwear into the OR, even after I explained to her why I was wearing it. Terribly sorry lady It was given back to me in a biohazard bag, which I'm certain is standard procedure, but seemed fitting given the way things have gone lately. Sorry, if I don't laugh I'll cry I guess.

I've not yet given up hope for the ablation to work, at least to conrol my horrendous bleeding. It's only been 6 days, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Waiting games are not games I'm partial to, or frankly very good at, but what do you do?

The diabolical cramping I experienced post ablation has receded a great deal, thank God--when they kept pumping me full of drugs to no avail, I thought it might never end. I am still getting some cramping, and on occasion when I do it stops me in my tracks, but it's very intermittent now. I know 2 people personally who have had the ablation--1 told me literally it was a "piece of cake" and the other said she had some mild pain, but was over to my house 2 days later, sipping a pina colada as if she didn't have a care in the world. I think this is why a lot of my friends and family had a hard time believing I was in as much pain as I was.

What I am still having is constant pain. Not the debilitating stuff right after and for the first few days post-op, but it's there. Pelvic region, lower back, inner thighs. I know I am still a bit sore from the incision (getting up, laughing and sneezing are particularly reviled tasks these days) and from the poking around they did with my insides. But I already know that the procedures have not alleviated the pain I went in with. And the fact that they found nothing during this is very discouraging. I have my post op on the 12th, perhaps the doc will shed some light on where we can go from here. I'm sure that I could live with the pain, but it does affect my daily life and I'm tired of it. I just want answers. Sorry for the novel, and best wishes to you!
