In hospital; wrong meds

I am awake and somewhat panicky because I was given Ambien to help me sleep. I have chronic insomnia and a medication regime for it, which apparently I am not allowed to take. I understood this last night when I was on narcotics (and couldn't sleep) but I am not on narcotics now. The Ambien isnt working for me, plus i am starving bc i havent passed gas yet. I listed my usual sleep med in my list of meds -- why would they give me something else? Why can't I be on my usual regime?

For a number of reasons actually. What you normal take may not be okay with the medications you were given during surgery. It may not be okay with the anesthesia you were given. It may not be okay with whatever pain medications you are being given to manage pain narcotic or non-narcotic. It may worsen the bowel issue you are already having which is preventing you from passing gas. It may not be okay since you have not been able to eat for an extended period of time. Your doctor may not prescribe that medication. It may not be available at your medical facility. Etc. etc. etc.

Typically, if you "fight" a sleeping medication it won't work like you need it to. Try to relax and let the Ambien do its job even if it is not your normal medication.

If you are having a panic attack, let your nurse know.

Dr just said it was ok to be on my med--had said that yesterday too. Said they might have thought it was ok to substitute. But the ambien really didn't work.
