Unhappy - One Ovary Left...what can be taken for the Hotflashes and dryness? One Ovary Left...what can be taken for the Hotflashes and dryness?

I didn't think I fell into the other two categories, as one is for having 2 ovaries the other was for not having 2 ovaries...maybe I misunderstood. If I placed this in the wrong area...please move it to the correct place. Thanks!

I am 8 days post op to a Hysterectomy/Rectocele Repair and Left ovary taken due to it being Cystic and having internal septations. I do have Cancer running in both sides of the family, Breast Cancer recently taken from Mom's breasts...my Great Aunt died of Breast Cancer and my Daddy has Prostate Cancer.

I was just going to tell the Dr. to take both Ovaries...that way I wouldn't be snuck up on later...with Ovarian Cancer in the other Ovary...but decided to tell my Gyno that I would leave that up to her and as to what she see's shen she's in there. So she left the other ovary.

From what I understand....sometimes the ovary that was left ends up dieing or shutting down for a specific amnt of time...and either "wakes back up" or comes back to life or quits producing altogether. But then sometimes it continues working just fine and may even carry the heavy load of both ovaries....

I have noticed quite a few hot flashes...sweaty spells...etc, even during this 8 day's post op.

Is there a way of me knowing what additional replacement therapy I can take...if any? I also had issues w/dryness even before having the surgery...I have never lubricated very well....

Does anyone have any experiences with these issues or any advice I can "borrow?"

One ovary can provide you with all the hormones you need. But first, you may need to get through recovery.

The blood supply to the ovary can be interrupted with the removal of the uterus and until a new one is established the ovary may not work as well as it should which can cause you to experience some menopause symptoms.

Additionally, anesthesia can cause some symptoms that seem like menopausal ones. Changes in your diet, medications, and possibly not drinking enough can also cause some symptoms that may seem like menopause.

So for now, try not to worry or panic. If your symptoms persist after some weeks, then you and your doctor can discuss your situation and determine your options. You may also need to consult with an oncologist about your personal cancer risks and if they prevent you from using HRT. My mom uses Estrace even through her mom had a double mastectomy for pre-cancer. However, before he will refill her script, my mom's doctor requires her to have a yearly mammogram.

in there!
