hyster or not to hyster?

i have found out i have a enlarged uterus and fibroids very large ones also endo., and a cyst on my ovary which they said was complex. ive had a ca125 test which was negative. the dr , told me i could have a hyster or not , up to me she would support either, when i ask what she would do if she were me , she responded , id do an alternative treatment and get u thru menapause. im not there yet although im 52. but she also told me no promise of there not being cancer there ? guess she had to say tht ?? i have mixed feelings , im not wanting surgery but i want to be healthy. she has told me i would need abdominal surgery becuase of the size of the uterus and the fibroids , also im a larger woman .
so please can someone give me some solid advice ? or suggestions or similar exp. thanks .!

Re: hyster or not to hyster?

I too share your same problem except I'm 29. I just had endo taken out, I have already lost an ovary to a cyst and have an enlarged retroflexed uterus with a fibroid that is laying on my colon and rectum. I wish there was a magic answer or button to make it a clear decision. I go see a specialist at the end of the month to get a third opinion. My first two were conflicting, and although I know and respect both providers I am still very unsure of my decision. I wish you the very best luck with your decision and please know your not alone. Hopefully we can both come to peace with the "right" decision.

Re: hyster or not to hyster?

A hysterectomy is such major surgery with a lengthy recovery. It has many pros and cons and should be thoroughly researched before heading in that direction . If your doctor thinks alternatives can stretch you out until menopause maybe they should be explored, or maybe you should get a second opinion before making a decision. You mentioned your doctor said there was no promise about cancer being there.Do you have any reason to believe there could be? Does your doctor suspect cancer? Do you have family history of cancer.? If cancer is a valid concern I would go the hysterectomy route for sure.

Re: hyster or not to hyster?

Hi sunshine:

It sounds like you would benefit from a 2nd or 3rd medical opinion to help you make a decision. Check out the HysterSisters videoon this topic: http://www.givemeasecond.com/

I hope you are able to find the right decision soon. I am sending huge cyberhugs

Re: hyster or not to hyster?

I have the same issues as you.....2 large fibroids, and a cyst on an ovary. My periods have changed dramatically in the last 16 mths. I have discussed all of my options with my ob/gyn and have decided to have a total abdominal hysterectomy, which is scheduled for next week (6/27/12). I have got so much knowledge and support from the website and my family that at this point, I am looking forward to having it done. I am ready to get back to a better quality of life. I am tired of going thru what I have been in the last 16 mths.
