Re: Previous breast cancer - when will surgical menopause start after TLH/BSO??

Hey there! No, I am not going back on the Tamoxifen, my onco said I would be put on Femara or I had other choices (but none were the Tam). I'm confused because I know some post-menopausal women are given the Tam, and others are given the AIs like Femara, etc - Not sure who gets what why. I will ask my onco next month when I see her.

I hope your recent breast surgery went well and that you are having a good recovery!![/quote]

Hi, I'm off into hospital on Monday for my op, was meant to be last week but got cancelled as no bed available!!
I asked my gyn/onc about tamoxifen but he said it was up to my breast consultant to decide so will be asking him next week when I'm in hospital - im sure I was told id be changed to an AI x

For menopause symptoms my sil uses soy menopause available at Walmart, she swears by it.

Diet is also key. No dairy and no meat if possible because of the hormones. Rice milk is better than soy.

Good luck to all!

Hi I have jut got home from the hospital after having my breast surgery on Tuesday. I thought I'd update re tamoxifen - they have taken me off tamoxifen and given me femara. The reason for this is that now I have no ovaries I do not need tamoxifen but as a little estrogen is produced by the adrenal glands the femara works on them. It seems the side effects are very similar although I've only been on them two days so I'm yet to find out. I have also been given calcium tsblets to chew twice a day x

Hope you are feeling ok after your opp. I have never been offered calcium tablets. I was wondering if I should be taking them. I will ask doc next time I go.

Re: Previous breast cancer - when will surgical menopause start after TLH/BSO??

I have the same question. I am 43, ER + breast cancer, taking Tamoxifen and about 4 days Post op hysterectomy with ovaries removed. I was having some hot flashes, crying spells with Tamoxifen, so I am wondering if this is the worst. I am guessing it may take a few weeks to "kick" in, but with all this going on in the past year...it would nice to forgo the symptoms! Let me know what your doctor thinks.

Re: Previous breast cancer - when will surgical menopause start after TLH/BSO??

Hi I am now 9 weeks post op and my only symptoms have been the night sweats which I was experiencing on tamoxifen but I am noticing them more now although the weather here has been rather muggy at night and I'm not the only one that's having problems staying asleep!! I've had hot flashes daily but do not cause any bother are very mild and only a couple a day that last seconds. My gp has given me an old blood pressure treatment for the night sweats called Clomidine, she said they do work in some women so I'm giving it a go. When I went back to hospital for my recent breast surgery I was 5 weeks post op from my hyster, my breast consultant took me off tamoxifen and gave me letrazole instead.

Thanks. I am now a week out from hysterectomy with more intense night sweats and hot flashes...I hope this is the worst of it!

I will see my onc in Sept. to switch over from something other than Tamoxifen.
THanks and YES!! It has been hot here in upstate NY too!! Feeling stronger everyday!
