Hysteroscopy with possible additional procedures

Hi,

I am 50 with a year of menopause under my belt. I had a small bleed at the end of May, called my gyn who recommended a pelvic ultrasound and said she'd call me back with the results when she came back from vacation. Three weeks later I had a much(!!!) worse bleed, that was reminiscent of my periods prior to having a UFE several years ago. When the gyn called to discuss the ultrasound results she said I had cyst on one ovary, & mentioned hysteroscopy, and sounded as if she wasn't totally sure if the bleeding was from a polyp, or from my fibroid. She wants a repeat ultrasound to check the status of the cyst. She says depending on what the hysteroscopy shows she will do:

D&C
either a
polypectomy
or fibroid resection
and possibly a
laparascopic ooopherectomy

She was vague regarding recuperation, and I can see why considering what might or might not be done. I am clueless about how much time I'll need off work. I am on my feet a lot during the day and I don't want to overdo it! Any suggestions as to how much time I might need off?

Re: Hysteroscopy with possible additional procedures

I haven't had one but wanted to say if you've had it by now I hope it went well for you. When it looked like I might need one the Dr implied the recovery was minimal but hopefully someone with experience can confirm that. Good luck with your procedures.

Sorry, I didn't say when the procedure was going to be, did I? It's not until July 27th.

I'm still waiting to talk to my gyn. We've been playing telephone tag since last Thursday.

Re: Hysteroscopy with possible additional procedures

Had my annual today and the doctor mentioned as though it was a reminder (she had not told me before) that because of a previous ablation there was a chance she wouldn't be able to remove whatever was causing my bleeding issues, and in that event a hysterectomy is the next step.

This is ridiculous. I've had an ablation, 2 UFEs, and bleeding after a year of supposed menopause (all this in a six year period).

My oldest sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the last year, too, and we discussed how this might play into the extent of a possible hysterectomy.

Re: Hysteroscopy with possible additional procedures

Had the hysteroscopy today. The ovarian cyst went from complex to simple on the last scan so the doctor decided not to remove it. She got into the cavity but could not get to the fibroid. As long as I just have small bleeds it's ok. She thinks the bleeding might stop on its own, so we'll do a wait and see (and carry pads around I guess!) before contemplating a hysterectomy as the next step.

The anesthesiologist was great... I woke up very cold (the hospital's recovery area is freezing as is the OR area! Even my husband commented on that) with no nausea whatsoever. Napped away most of the afternoon, took a 800 mg Ibuprofen when I started aching around 4 pm but other than that I feel pretty good.

Re: Hysteroscopy with possible additional procedures

I'm glad it went OK after, although it doesn't sound like it resolved as much as you hoped. Good luck holding off on the hyst, there's a lot of info here if you end up opting for one.

Re: Hysteroscopy with possible additional procedures

No it didn't resolve the problem. I am very glad to have it behind me though.

If she'd taken one ovary she was going to take the other due to my sister's diagnosis, just to be safe. It's odd how strangely that made me feel, considering I know a) I'm post-menopausal and b) my child bearing years are waaaay behind me. Just sounds so final, you know?

Thanks for replying.
