ovaries or no ovaries ?
If a person chooses to keep ovaries (if possible) then how can one know if there is ovarian cancer later? I am scared of this. Doc says many risks to HRT and I brought up the concern about ovarian cancer later. she said there is no screening for it. one sis had uterine cancer had full hysterectomy at 48 years old and other sis had cervical cancer at age 32. this scares me. doc says it is sort of up to me but I don't know how to make the decision.

Re: ovaries or no ovaries ?
 Caraetc,
This decision is a very personal one. For me, it was easy. I had already gone through menopause. I lost my mom to ovarian cancer in 2008. I had the same symptoms that she did due to IBS which I have and she did also. After loosing her, I was really proactive with pelvic ultrasounds and CA125 testing every year. In January, they found three small cysts - one in my ovary, one in my cervix and one in my uterus. My Gyn Oncologist who I really trusted strongly recommended having everything out. I agreed and had my surgery in February. Recovery was not easy, but I know I made the right decision for me. I feel great now and it has given me tremendous peace of mind as I was terrified of ovarian cancer. Your doctor is right, there is no way to detect ovarian cancer usually until it is in the late stages as my mom's was (and she was a nurse).
This is just my experience. Talk to your doctor, get a second opinion, arm yourself with knowledge and then do what you feel is the right thing for you. Only you can make that decision and I'm sure you will make the right one.
Take care and keep coming here for support regardless of what you decide. This site has been a great source of knowledge and comfort for me.

Re: ovaries or no ovaries ?
My hysterectomy is also Tuesday....I recently called my biological mother and asked if there was any cancer in the family. She said no, but they had to remove a grapefruit size cyst when she was 50. With all I have been through I have opted to get the ovaries out too!

Re: ovaries or no ovaries ?
I am also confused if I should get my ovaries removed. Doc said it was totally up to me. The whole thought of ovarian cancer scares me as well. He did strongly suggest leaving the cervix. My surgery is September 26th. Good luck.

Re: ovaries or no ovaries ?
I opted to take both of my ovaries during surgery since I was already diagnosed with cancer, I was scared to leave them in. Everyone has to make this decision on their own, I would just suggest doing some research to make a fully informed decision.
