Is this normal?

Hello.
I have a couple of questions. I had my surgery on the 26th so that was 5 days ago. I still am soo tired. I find that I am able to walk about three times a day to the end of the block, and maybe fold a little laundry or something. When I am done doing those things I am soo tired that I just need to sleep, I feel like over half the day or more I am either sleeping or laying down, Is that normal? I cannot sit up straight for very long, I usually am able to maybe for an hour.I feel like I am not active enough. I also still have no appetite. I can barely eat. When I do I either get very sick to my stomach or I puke. Also after I do any of my walking I am very sore, and it feels like my insides are going to fall out, is that normal? Should I be doing more activity and eating more? I dont want to complicate my recovery but my body is so tired even if I feel really good, it does not last very long. I also have not slept a full night since I got home, I wake up in extreme pain. I am very swollen as well still. Please help me? I want to be doing the right things and get better so I can start school soon.THanks

Re: Is this normal?

I had my surgery on the 10th and I am still extremely tired. I didnt get my appetite back until after two weeks post op. Today I took two mini walks but stopped when I begin feeling uncomfortable. In my opinion you are doing way too much. I would suggest taking it easy and take your meds around the clock. You just had MAJOR surgery. This
website has short videos that tell you what to expect weeks 1&2, 3&4, and 5&6. I hope this helps. Dont forget to Rest, Rest & Rest.

Re: Is this normal?

Lovely covered the first part. I also suggest eating small and frequent snacks. Things like a small piece of fruit, granola bar, a yogurt, maybe a handful of nuts. Also talk to your doc. Not eating and vomiting is just not good. There are some medications they can give you to help with this. Hugs sweetie!!! The first two weeks are rough.

Re: Is this normal?

Yes what you're experiencing is normal. I hardly got out of bed my first week. I couldn't sit at all for the first 4 days and ate my dinner standing up. DH had to encourage me to eat as I had no appetite at all. The pain and the swelling you have are similiar to what I had too. Please be patient with yourself and listen to your body. You should not be doing more if you are too tired and too sore. I am surprised you are walking as much as you are. I suggest taking a dimenhydrinate (Dramamine or Gravol) when your stomach is upset because vomitting must be painful and you need to keep all your meals in your tummy.

You are very very early in your healing. Remember it's a marathon, not a sprint. Initial healing is 6-8 weeks and total healing is 6-12 months. Lie down, let your bottom rest, it has been through a trauma and will take time to heal. Allow your family to pamper the Princess!

Re: Is this normal?

Thank you so much for your imput. I think my anxiety is just gettting the best of me. I want to be able to take care of my family and myself and just sleeping all the time is something new to me. I sometimes forget I had such a major surgery. I want to thank you ladie again because I do not think I could make it through this right now if I did not find this site, especially being so young.

Re: Is this normal?

Are you wearing a belly binder? I can tell you that my insides feel so much better with one on. I had surgery yesterday and when I had to do all the walking I thought my insides were going to fall out until they got me a binder.

Re: Am I active enough?

Being tired is normal for where you are in your recovery. You might want to call your doc and tell him/her about not having an appetite. It could be your pain meds. And you need to eat to help you recover. I still have times where I am so sore after walking that I can barely move later. Don't do too much too early. You need to rest. With my c-sections and the hysterectomy, for the first week, I went for short walks every few hours. They wanted me to walk at least 4 times a day. I think that will be a good gauge for you on your activity. I hope things get better. Keep us posted.

Re: Am I active enough?

At 5 days, I'd say you are doing too much. Pain is normal, but if your insides are feeling like they're going to fall out after walking, I'd say you walked too much. Walk shorter distances. Sleeping a lot is what you should be doing at this stage, your body is recovering and has lots of healing to do. Listen to your body, if it's tired, then rest as much as necessary. Don't push yourself, you'll only lengthen your recovery time. I was nauseous for at least the first two weeks. I had to have nausea medication prescribed to me and take it in order to eat a decent meal. You should probably call your doctor and ask for something for nausea because you certainly need to be able to eat for nutrition. Be patient, rest, and allow yourself time to heal. Remember you had major surgery.
