Who experiences hormone fluctuations? please help!

I"M SORRY IF THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE STUPIDEST QUESTION EVER.....

TAH 7/24- kept one ovary and had one removed. Should I expect hormone issues? I'm feeling sad and irritable today (day 4) for the first time and also I know its cold in my house but my skin feels hot....

I feel like this was never explained fully to me by my doc... I was so concentrated on that if I lost both ovaries I'd be in surgical menopause/beginning HRT and what that might entail, but my doc told me that if he was able to keep the right ovary I'd be "exactly the same hormonally as before surgery"............ Now I'm thinking he meant that AFTER RECOVERY I would be the same, not right after surgery...?? I'm beginning to wonder if women who lose one ovary experience hormone changes post surgery....maybe even women who keep both ovaries??? I feel so stupid for not knowing this or having looked into this ahead of time. I was so focused on the fact that I might be starting HRT that I spent all my time researching that and NOT about the other side of things.

Please help me understand.

Thank You

During a hysterectomy the blood supply to the ovary(s) can be cut off and it can take some time for them to wake back up. It is not unusual at all to have symptoms during this time. I wouldn't panic just yet, give yourself and your ovary some time to recover from surgery.

Re: Who experiences hormone fluctuations? please help!

I kept one ovary also. My surgery was in '06.

Most women do just fine with one ovary and it takes time for the body to adjust surgically and hormonally. Your body has been through a lot. Fluctuations are to be expected.

For me...After a few months I realized my ovary wasn't working as before so I choose to start hrt and never looked back.

My best advice for you is...be gentle with yourself, ask for help, don't think suffering is a good thing, and believe me.... NO question is too dumb!

Many blessings with your recovery!

I am in the same boat! I was told my one ovary would be sufficient and that I'd be the same as before. I am going through some awful symptoms and just had a crazy bout with PMS that was 100x worse than anything I had ever experienced. Maybe we can be each other's sounding boards.
Also, thank you to the ladies who responded!

I would love a uni-ovary buddy to share and compare with lol. I'm so eager to see how this all shakes out. I'm a bit behind you, as my TAH was 7/24/12 but thats ok. Not sure if you remember...did you have any indications of anything at about 2 weeks post op. I'm about 12 days post op, so I have a lot going on but not so much hormonally. I am healing and dealing and resting for the most part. I have had maybe 3-4 brief (less than 30 min) episodes of feeling "blue" and about the same number of hot flashes- BUT I think that is par for the course with a hysterectomy regardless of the ovary situation. Actually, its probably pretty par for the course for any female who underwent major surgery (with anesthesia, pain meds, trauma, sleep disturbance etc.) SO.... I'm not sure what to think yet. I know that my right ovary is cystic, but in the somewhat healthy sense (they dont get too large and they dissapate with ovulation). My surgeon said it looked healthy so we kept it. My last period started 7/23, so I havent really even gone through a PMS cycle yet. Like I said, I'm very curious as to what ovulation, PMS and everntually my overall hormonal state of being ends up being now that I'm an ovarian cyclops LOL.
Sorry your PMS was bad. What other changes have you noticed along the way? And again....do you recall if you felt any different than pre-op at about 2 weeks post?
AS you can tell...I'm very excited about your offer to be eachothers sounding boards as we wade these new waters. Anyone else who's reading and would like to chime in please feel free!
