Unhappy - Frustrated! First appt with gyn for prolapse didnt go well. Frustrated! First appt with gyn for prolapse didnt go well.

I have a question for all of you? When you lay down does everything fall back into place? (My gyn only examined me laying down.) I have had so much vaginal pressure, pain in cervix, pain in lower back and groins, painful intercourse, cant keep a tampon in, urinary inc. etc.
TMI Alert!
I have 2 bulges in the opening of my vagina that are clearly visible when sitting and standing. im almost positive the one on top is my bladder and the one on bottom is a rectocele. Right behind the bulges sits my cervix. I feel like my gyn completely dismissed my symptoms today. He agreed i was having some bladder issues and referred me to a urologist. When i asked about the prolapse he said it wasnt severe enough to treat, and to come back if thing started protruding out of my vagina. Basically he said i would just have to deal with the symptoms in the meantime. As for the rectocele he said "this is normal after having a big baby".

Any one else had an experience like this? I feel like he blew me off because im alot younger than most women who run into these troubles. I'm only 26 and i do not want to go on not being able to wear tampons let alone not be able to have sex with my husband without being in pain.

Ask for a referral to a urogynecologist instead of a urologist. That way both prolapses can be handled by the same doctor. Ask to be examined standing as well as lying down. It could be they will say it is too early for surgery but they may prescribe PT and/or estrogen cream to build up your vaginal vault walls.

Yes, for me, everything falls back in when lying down, feels ok then but we can't spend the rest of our lives that way. A urogyn is usually the specialist to see with prolapse issues, they get you to cough, bear down, push out speculum, not good to have a couple of strangers looking but it has to be done. Write your symptoms down, together with questions, fears anxieties, they should be able to see everything, maybe then you could suggest standing if you don't feel happy with her\his diagnosis. My own urogyn is excellent I can ask her anything. Hope this helps.

Re: Frustrated! First appt with gyn for prolapse didnt go well.

Wow, that's kinda amazing. Yes, my prolapse would go back up while lying down, and my doctor examined me in that position only, yet he had no trouble diagnosing me with a grade 2 cystocele.

During the discussion session, afterwards, he said it was MY option on if to have it repaired or to wait and see if it drops more. I chose to fix it, as I wanted it repaired before menopause struck, and it would be harder to heal. He agreed.

I think you need to get a second opinion. Sure you're young, but no woman should need to live with falling parts, if it's not necessary.

Thank you for all your words of encouragement! I live in a rural area and we dont have a urogyn around here. The urologist i got referred to is a woman so im hoping i will have better luck when i see her. If not looks like i will be on the hunt for a urogyn!

Re: Frustrated! First appt with gyn for prolapse didnt go well.

Yes, it does retreat laying down. First doc I saw in total pain confirmed uterine prolapse and said see you in 6 months. Second opinion, one week later, did much more thorough exam, coughing, pulling down on cervix (ouch) to see how far it would stretch, found rectocele, etc. Fitted me with a pessary and sent me on my way, had to get a smaller pessary a few days later, then ended up back a week later telling him I want a hysterectomy, he didn't object at all, said meet me in my office, and I'm now 3 weeks from surgery. I highly recommend the pessary, it will make your life much more tolerable while you make a decision and get another diagnosis. Makes a lot of difference, no more pain issues, and really not a big deal for short term anyway.

My gyn didnt even offer a pessary as an option. He told me to come back if I notice bulges coming out. I'm positive I am going to seek a 2nd opinion.

Re: Frustrated! First appt with gyn for prolapse didnt go well.

As most of the posts above, my urogyn examined me standing up. She also said some women may have a stage 2 or 3 prolapse and be OK with it while others have a minor prolapse and are in alot of discomfort -- it is very individualized and you are entitled to your assessment of your discomfort!

Good luck with the urologist! Maybe a woman would be better?? I would start by telling her you feel the gyno brushed you off and you are hoping she will really hear what you have to say!

Re: Frustrated! First appt with gyn for prolapse didnt go well.

Mine got to where it would pop back into place only if I bent over - like touching the floor! I was never examined standing up, and was told to let her know when I was ready to have it taken care of. My prolapse came and went for 6 years, but over the last 6 months got worse. I had a regular checkup in May, told her I was ready and she said let's do it.

If you're ready to get it done, let it be known!

I am seven weeks out today and it feels great to walk around without that bulge!!!
