Anemia & Exhaustion After Iron IV

I keep falling into the range of iron deficiency anemia... a few years ago I woke up one day and wasn't able to stay awake for more than 10-20 minutes for 2 days before I was able to express myself to my family and get to the doctor (I have other health issues and my husband figured it was those along with insomnia and that I must have been awake during the night instead), they ran a slew of tests and determined that it was anemia... tried the oral pills but each time gave me tons of other symptoms and didn't work as well as the hematologist had hoped.

Then this year it struck again (had a spotty year of testing due to the process of moving our family across the state) and we went for an iron iv (about 6 hours between the antihistamine and test doses then the real thing) during the winter but it returned and I had to have another iv (a little under 4 hours since I'd been tested before for an allergic reaction) a little over a month ago. Each time I've felt so completely beat afterwards... the first time I was sick as a dog almost a week later for a week and this time I managed to only get bad migraines that 2nd week, but now that I'm just over a month out I'm completely exhausted again, worse than any of the bouts with untreated anemia other than the time I couldn't stay awake for days.

I go for my surgery consult at the beginning of next week and should be getting my hysterectomy before I can have another period (benign fibroids, intensely painful and heavy periods, theoretically may have adenomyosis according to the gyn who performed my hysteroscopy/d&c/fibroid removal, and the anemia is expected to be a side effect of all this), but am getting a little worried that they may say that my body isn't strong enough or that my trouble with an apparent latex allergy and orthostatic hypotension/midodrine prescription could create issues with the surgery that they want to perform....

But, I also wish I knew how normal it is to be this exhausted and if it's just a side effect everyone goes through with the multi-hour iron iv treatments and if anyone had their surgery while recovering from their iron iv's?

Thanks!

Anemia & Exhaustion After Iron IV

I am going through the same thing. Had iron dextran transfusion in april, my Iron was at 3. Then came up, but I still didnt feel like myself. Having long periods, bleeding since July 26th, and hasnt stopped. Had another iron transfusion last week, and I am still feeling tired and no energy. I have a hyster schld for oct 8th and just hope my blood work is good to go and I dont have to postpone the surgery.

Hang in their, let us know how your doing. HUGS.

Re: Anemia & Exhaustion After Iron IV

Thanks... Recovering from the iv and have a bit more energy, but still not myself. At least I no longer feel like I have a waterbed mattress on top of me!

At the surgery consult, the Dr flipped the table on me and had me get a Mirena, after I was sure the other doctors told me that they'd ruled me out for it, but apparently had noted it was an option in the records. So Tuesday I got the Mirena and crossing my fingers that it helps!
