Thyroid / HRT / Diabetes - UGH!
Just wanted to drop in and see if anyone else is experiencing similar issues. I saw my doctor at the 5 week mark (June 6, 2012) and at that time, he ordered bloodwork and another 19 days at home due to my incisional issues. Anyway... I had the bloodwork done and returned to my doctor today.
Today I learned I have hypothyroidism. This is a bit of a shock to me seeing as how I haven't had thyroid issues in the past. At any rate, He prescribed me some thyroid medication which starts low and works its way up (if needed) in a couple of months.
I also learned (not shocked) that my hormones were on the floor. Seeing as how I have had literally almost EVERY symptom in the book for Estrogen/Progesterone/Testosterone Deficiencies I wasn't all that shocked. I also have been terrible to live with as of recent. My husband and I are fighting constantly and it's just because of me! I don't mean to be awful, but I have been! Not to mention that I was cleared to have sex on the 6th and here it is the 22nd and we have had sex once. I don't want it! Well, after visiting my doc and finding out the hormone levels, it wasn't surprising. I was actually very relieved to find out that I had those hormone readings because it meant that it wasn't all in my head. The hot flashes have been horrible! I'm 35 and I feel like I'm 70. I'm so happy that my doc got these readings and he's starting me on bio-identical hormone therapy. I was nervous about that, but he assured me that if it didn't work out, that he could always prescribe me the normal forms of HRT. I have done some research and found that BHRT is actually very well received by many women. I'm just more nervous about it since I have the thyroid prob as well now.
Also included in the bloodwork was checks on my A1C levels/insulin/glucose. I already knew I was diabetic but it has been fairly well controlled through diet. My A1C was 6.6% but I wasn't shocked at that since my sugar has been out of whack since my surgery. Now, he's got me on Janumet XR, and this other stuff called Victoza. I'm like a walking pharmacy! not to mention I am on BP meds as well. I feel like I'm falling apart.
Anyone else facing all these health issues at the same time as trying to recover from surgery and getting used to menopause? I mean, if I have to take all these drugs to feel better, that's all well and good. But....I am overweight and would like to attempt some weight loss here once I'm fully able. Right now, I'm just taking things slow because I still get pretty tired pretty easily. Doc blames the severe hormone deficiencies/hypothyroidism for the persistent fatigue. I get to return to work on Monday the 25th so I'm super excited about that. I hope that the return to my life schedule will assist me in getting back to normal as well.
Thanks for listening and sorry for the rambling post! I hope all of you have a great day!
PS - I also should have mentioned that I had TAH/BSO on May 2, 2012

Re: Thyroid / HRT / Diabetes - UGH!

It's not unusual for the thyroid to go out of whack after menopause. Mine went out of whack about 2 years after surgery. I am surprised that yours went out of whack so quickly. Than again, the hormone drop and stress from surgery can have a profound effect on our bodies.
You are still early post op. Don't push it. Full recovery from a hysterectomy can take 6 months to a year.

I feel like a walking pharmacy too - welcome to the club!
I have had hypothyroid for, oh, I'm guessing 5 years or so no, my dose gradually getting increased, I'm up to .112mcg I think.
This past Feb my NP suspected I had PCOS and likely was insulin resistant - during the tests to confirm that diagnosis is when they found atypia resulting in my hyst on 7/10/12 (TVH/BSO).
In the months leading up to my hyst I was learning about PCOS so I've added a multi vitamin, cinnamon (2 capsules), take 2 doses of metformin a day, 2 doses of calcium, the synthroid, blood pressure med, something for acid reflux at night, and now the other day added premarin.
I never thought I'd have to have one fo those pill containers with all the different times of day on them....I'm now lost without it! I'm also waiting for my medicine cabinet to fall into the sink off the wall!
I'm not a tiny woman myself - though I'm happy that I have lost 10lbs post op - not too shabby sitting on my rear for a month. I'm hoping to get back to the gym and do water aerobics once I've been given the blessing and continue some weight loss.
Rest assured...you are not alone!
