I was just curious how many people have had trouble with soreness near the tailbone. I had some trouble prior to my surgery due because I tended to angle my sitting to avoid pressure areas from my fibroids and have noticed that I still seem to have spots that get sore and tender easily.
I saw my OB/GYN today (almost 10 wks post op) and asked about this. He said he hasn't had any patients with this problem but I seem to remember quite a few people here with this problem.
It would be great to be able to sit naturally without thinking about it. (I want to see Return of the King but hesitate to chance sitting for over 3 hrs in a theatre seat).
The problem does seem to be getting better but I wonder how long it took to clear up for others.
Hi there, I am so sorry you are going through this... it does hurts!
I still have mine but it isn't constant anymore, I notice it with a wrong move on my part but it is the same pain. My Dr. didn't relate it to the surgery at all and said he had not heard of it either so I chalk it up to "the things nobody tells you about" syndrome. Dr. also had not heard of brain fog this long after surgery but it's still there.
2001, I had a sore tailbone, predominantly on the left side. I did not fall or anything to cause the "pain." My PCP stated...
"this is common for women in your age bracket...and your loss of weight (I had lost 6 lbs in 1 year).....treatment?....."buy a donut cusion!"......5 months later, I said the tailbone pain was constant, and excrutiating. I was cancelling professional employment (professional PR consultant), declinging jury duty!......
After sitting on this sore tailbone....coccyx.....for 1 1/2 years.....declining choir bus tours, anything sitting causing "knife-like" pain....I went to a chiropractor I go to church with....nver been to a chiro in my life. After 1 1/2 yrs of daily "knife pain".... ending anything that had to do with sitting....eating, driving, etc....
He took xrays....subluxation of the coccygeal joint.....has NOTHING to do with "being a woman in my age bracket".....55, i.e., "blame whatever on menopause".....and ......after 1 month of therapy.....which is manipulative, not "pop the back protocol"....since August, 2002....I have NO pain in the coccyx/tailbone.
This may not be the cause of your sore tailbone.....but, it was mine......it might be worth asking for an xray of the lower spine.....or go to chiro, who will take xrays.
And, it has nothing to do with ANY "age bracket".....man, woman, or child.
Let' us know about this.....that tailbone pain CAN get to the point of more than just "soreness."
Tailbone pain was my #2 worst pain post op. #1 Worst Pain was the dreaded gas attacks.
By Week 3 post op--my poor tailbone was sooooooo painful i could NOT get comfortable NOTHING helped. man it was miserable. My DH rubbed and rubbed my tailbone, and brought me ice packs which did alieve the pain a bit.
I finally bought a tailbone cushion from QVC about Week 5 and by that time i was up and around enough that it was getting better.
What resolved it was being well enough to get up some during the day--and be up most of the day. It was really sore and painful 24/7 for about 4 weeks though.
I'll be 6w post op tomorrow. When I came out of surgery I SWORE up and down that they chipped or bruised my tailbone. It hurt worse than anything at the time. The doc said I had to lay on a steel table for quite some time and that probably attributed the pain. To this day I still get pains off and on. Sometimes it seems like it's triggered by the way I'm laying or sitting. It is getting better with time. So there's my story. HUGZ
I had severe tail bone pain, felt like a rat chewing on it! Dr. said
one time it must be a virus and another time he said it was
probably a disc problem {didn't have it before surgery}.
But anyway I was told by someone else that it is the way they
position you on the table at surgery. But I can tell you something
about the doc's, they all say they don't know these things, or
that they've NRVER had anyone like you before. I have had many
problems {long story} but they all act so dumb about everything
concerning a problem. It took 6 months for mine to improve and
it did get better, one of the few things that have improved, so
have heart, if that is the only problem you have you are lucky.
It is very painful! but it should improve. GOOD LUCK. SLT
I had my surgery 8 months ago and I am experiencing this pain also. I spoke to a ARNP and she advised me to take two advils every 4 hours to see if that helps and also use heat on it. I have tried the advils and that seem to help a little.
I find it very strange that all of us are experiencing the same pain after having the same surgery. Doctors sure don't everything. I hope the rest of you are feeling a little better.
There must be some connection with having this surgery and this tailbone pain.
This is very painful, hope this advil treament will work..
Glad to see that I'm not the only one - nice to hear from others. Mine wasn't too bad until I went back to work full time after 8 weeks off. I spend all day varying my position and standing up as much as possible. So much easier to sit at home where I can sit on the couch slightly angled with my knees up.
I just talked to someone at work that has the same problem - after childbirth. She said she was fine after her first child and can't understand why the problem with the 2nd. Funny how none of the OB/GYN's know anything - mine has been great for everything else. I made an appointment with my GP to see if he can refer me to another specialist. I figured that I probably need an X-ray of the area.
It's amazing how I always took sitting for granted - never gave it a thought until my cervix began pressing on my rectum. I had hoped that after my hysterectomy I would be able to sit normally. Oh well! (DH thinks it will be about 6 mos before everything recovers and returns to normal).
Like all of you, I have suffered with tailbone pain pretty much since my TVH 10/23/03. But from 3 weeks post op, things became really bad, any exercise made it worse, so all the advice about walking 10 mins every day was impossible.
I can happily sit on the couch at home in a semi reclined position, but upright is terrible. The pain radiates into my buttocks and down my thighs, I have to move around all the time. I have returned to work, to a sedentary job, and it is getting unbearable to be honest. Driving short distances is ok, but I drove for 4 and half hours to visit my parents at 12 weeks post op and ended up crying in agony!
Again my Doc said he had never heard of this before.... funny that there are so many other girls in this position, is it mainly with TVH??
Anyway keep smiling, hopefully our pain will reduce SOOON!!
