Active in community

Anyone feel like they have to tell too many people about surgery? I am a non-profit director and deal with many people in our community. I am frequently seen at events and speak with community groups on a daily basis. My being out of work 6 weeks necessitates some preparation to keep things running. I hate that I have had to inform so many people that I'm going on medical leave. I tried to just say leave and everyone kept saying to have a good time, or wow that will be nice to vacation so long. Couldn't let them think my recovery was going to be fun in the sun. Still, I am a private person that hates people to know my problems. I'm sure the last 6 months or so people have wondered why I'm less active and probably are thinking the worst. Really not sure where this is going... I just needed to get my feelings out. I appreciate the kindness of people around me and the prayers that will follow me into OR through recovery. Thankful for this site to say what I want when I have to keep a strong chin up for my community. Thanks for listening

Re: Active in community

I just said medical leave. Otherwise they thought it was vacation, like you say. Or leave for health reasons was another version. When they asked more I said I had to deal with some health problems. Rarely did anyone pursue it and I'm good at being private and evasive. However I'm not in the public eye. Also I wish I'd told more people, I would have had more support----but I didn't want GYN questions and comments. Obviously you can't be open, but I hope you do have some friends you can tell, for the support. Its nice to have at least someone checking in and be available. But the "public"----no, not everyone needs to know personal things. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery.

Re: Active in community

I incredibly feel for you. I have daily home therapy for my son for his Autism and I had to tell his therapists they had to take a few days break. I was grilled to the point I was in tears and broke down and told them the truth. Last night at my daughters soccer game a mom said to me in front of a few other moms "your kids are so cute when are you having another?" so I had to tell them, plus I am taking time off of my volunteer work and was put through the "have a great trip while you are gone..." I just keep saying This will pass.

PS I LOVE Chambersburg. I grew up in Kutztown

I am a teacher and had to tell the faculty. Several people have said "I'm sorry, but it's ONLY a hysterectomy"......they have no idea what I've been dealing with because I don't wear my feelings on my sleeve and because I teach music I always have to be the "happy" teacher. Still, those comments were really hurtful. I've told them very, very little. But, the principal did announce the reason for my "medical leave" at the last faculty meeting. I wanted so much to scream. Oh well.
