Hysterectomy and hypothyroid....

Hi. I'm scheduled for my hysterectomy on July 16th and pre op on the 7th. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroid since 2003. I was wondering if my thyroid would be affected after the hysterectomy in any way ? I am going to ask my dr but wanted to see if anyone else has had any experience with it. Thanks ☺️.

I'm interested in that as well and never thought to ask! I was diagnosed in 2004...

Re: Hysterectomy and hypothyroid....

I had a thyroid nodule before my surgery but my hormones always checked out normal before the surgery. A year or so after surgery, I started feeling really run down and I had not 1 but 7 nodules and I had developed hypothyroidism. Some ladies do find that a hysterectomy, especially with oophorectomy affects the thyroid as all the hormones work together and even fight for receptors. I was lucky in that I didn't have a lot of problem with the estrogen/thyroid balance. Some have to work on it a bit, and some are completely unaffected. It's worth asking about and perhaps doing a little monitoring a couple times in the year or two after surgery.

Re: Hysterectomy and hypothyroid....

I plan to get mine checked after post op recovery. Your hormones are such a delicate balance and you will feel so much better if you thyroid level is correct.

Re: Hysterectomy and hypothyroid....

Interesting - I was diagnosed with thyroid nodules in 1985 and my thyroid was shut down to stop their growth. I will have to check with the doctor on that too.

Re: Hysterectomy and hypothyroid....

I've got subclinical hypothyroidism. My GP ordered a TSH test two months after I had my hysterectomy to see if we needed to adjust my Synthroid dosage. In my case, no adjustment was necessary, but I'd certainly advise having the test done just to make sure.

Re: Hysterectomy and hypothyroid....

I have Hashimotos and both my gyn and primary said that it won't affect it at all and I will just stay on my monitoring schedule.

Re: Hysterectomy and hypothyroid....

Thanks ladies ☺️. Really nervous about everything but I'm glad I'm not alone with thyroid problems and dealing with this surgery.
