Steps?

Hi! I'm starting my 4th week of recovery. Feels like stomach muscles are back to normal. I used to feel a dropping sensation when getting in the bed. I guess week ligaments. Not feeling that anymore. I've heard some warnings about going up or down stairs. Is this really a big issue? I have steps leading down to my basement. For some reason I have a really big urge to go down there. It's where our family room is, game room and laundry. Does anyone have any experiences to share about doing steps at this stage?

Steps?

Sorry, not 4 weeks post op, but I live on the 2nd floor and came up 20 steps when I came home from the hospital. It was ok. I just took them slow.

I think it would be ok. Just listen to your body. If you get tired, rest. I wouldn't run up and down them ... and may limit use to a couple times a day ... but I think it would be ok to give it a try!

I tried stairs at the hospital before coming home. What does your doc say about stairs?

I have 3 sets of stairs in my house and have been going up and down since I came home from the hospital. (I had a vaginal though with cervix removed.) My doctor told me that it would be okay as long as I wasn't running. I haven't had any problems with them at all.

I live in a two-story house with 15 steps. The bedrooms are all upstairs. I have been going up the stairs to bed at night and downstairs in the morning for the day ever since I got home from the castle. My DH helps me. I thing as long as you hold on to something or someone you should be fine. Both my dr. and urologist said I could as long as I took it SLOW; which I did. Good luck and take care.

Even when I was in the hosp, my surgeon said I could do stairs on day 2. Not that I needed to...but he said just to make sure I held on to the bannister and had someone with me at first.

It was fine 5 days post-op. I used good posture, and used my legs to go up the stairs. Sounds funny - but I mean 'isolating' my legs like dancers isolate body parts, and only moving from the hip socket down, if that makes sense.

I also heard that going upstairs backwards helps...but you definitely want someone with you then!

Steps?

Oh....do be careful! I thought I was "superwoman" and tried to do the stairs in our humble aboad and regreted it deeply! Our bodies seem to take over our minds when the healing process is happening and we lapse into a false sense of being "o.k."...I waited until week 6 to do the stairs after experiencing my first trip up and down with so much agony. My doc didn't even allow me to drive until week 6 and by then I was almost off my pain meds (only at night time)! I know it's hard to not be where the action is - especially if everyone else is downstairs (or upstairs) and you're left on your own!

If you trust your patience and can wait for a little while longer you'll definitely be better for it! I mowed the lawn all by myself this last weekend and felt so good...small steps!!

I have stairs, and do them about twice a day. Going down backwards was a help. I only had someone help me first time up and down. And yes, HOLD onto that railing! ! ! Last thing you want to do is slip and fall.
