pre-op stool softener

Does anyone think it might be helpful to begin taking a stool softener a day or two before surgery. I am having an abdominal hysterectomy and having both ovaries removed on 3/1/04. I went for pre-op testing last night. They drew some blood, asked questions, did a very quick physical and that was it.

In the days before surgery DON'T take anything that your DR has not given you permission for, his office FIRST and get that permission.

Because of the reasons for constipation and gas after surgery, IMHO, stool softeners before won't have any effect after, but that is JMHO, call your DR for medical advice.

The night before my surgery--right before midnight when I was suppose to eat or drink nothing after that--my husband--who is a doc--told me to take two stool softeners--that way the first BM would be soft and it really worked! I continue to take them daily even though I am three weeks post-op today!

Always ask your Dr. first but I took a stool softerner, one a day, for 3 days before surgery. I had no problems with gas or having my first BM. In the past when I had 2 c-sections I had a terrible time with gas. I think it worked for me, but again, ask your dr.

My doctor recommends using a fleet enema the evening before.
