SAH: PARANOID of the post-op threads - Is it just me?

Everytime I venture over to the post-op board/thread and read some of the posts and complications that are happening or have happened, I create a new set of fears and worries for myself and my mind comes up with all of these horrible "what ifs" .....*sigh*

Is this happening to anyone else or am I just being a paranoid pansy?

You are nervous which makes sense. A hysterectomy is a major procedure. Plenty of us did great and had few complications. My SAH went better than planned and the healing was uncomplicated. You do need to take it easy in the first weeks. Some do not honor the reality that it is a major surgery. Don't over exert yourself. Even if you are feeling good.

I feel great and if I had to do it all over again I would--except I would do it sooner.

You have no idea how you just lifted a MENTAL LOAD off of me (and probably so many others)!

I've been reading and listening too much to operating and post-op stuff too. It scares me too. My nerves are pretty bad. I'm consoling myself that even though this week the nerves will get much worse, next Monday at this time I will hopefully (fingers crossed) be in surgery and all will be going well. Then there is no turning back; it will just be the doctor doing what he needs to do - and then all I need to do is heal and recover.

While the post-op threads can be scary, look at them as a learning tool. Plenty of them (by no means all of them) involve doing things that you simply shouldn't be doing -- having sex too soon, resuming housework activities too soon, venturing out of the home too soon, returning to work too soon, etc.

While they were a bit unnerving to me, they re-emphasized how important it is that I "follow the rules" and make sure I don't jeopardize my recovery.

Most people do not have problems post-op; they just aren't motivated to start a thread in the post-op section to detail how great everything is going.

My recovery was relatively uneventful too. Like many have said all over this site, it is major surgery, so take it easy and pamper yourself. Don't overdo it, rest when you're tired, have people pamper you as much as possible. I can't believe mine as almost three months ago. In my head I think it's so odd that it was so long ago because if feels so recent. But physically, I feel 100% better and can't really remember how tired I was, etc. All I can say is take it easy, don't push yourself, try not to compare yourself to people on your post-op week thread who are recovering faster, etc. There are several different types of surgeries, and the reasons for the surgeries are different, bodies are different, people are at different ages, etc, etc, so recoveries are all different... like snowflakes! :-) Best wishes for a easy recovery and good health!!!

When I had my surgery I hadn't found HS, and the only person I knew with a recent hyst was my mom, who had a dvh the year before. She did great, had no narcotics in hospital, no meds at all at home, no pain at all and no complications. But I was still scared. It helped to see her experience. Then I needed only Aleve for pain at home, less than a day of gas/bowel discomfort, and felt fine, no complications. I'd suggest avoiding post op boards, until you are post op. I know I would have been stressed for nothing if I'd read some of that. It's good support if you are post op but gives a skewed view if you are pre op. I hope your experience is as easy as mine was.

Chloe_Luv, don't worry about after the surgery until after the surgery. Don't let the posts scare you. People usually post because they want advice. The people who are doing well post-op are less inclined to post "Feeling fantastic" topics. They are either supporting other sisters or enjoying their new post-op lives off the board. I'm doing well after TAH-BSO and getting pampered by my wonderful husband! Your only job is to remain calm now and get well later, and then you can share your own recovery story. Hugs to you!

I went on here before my surgery and was told not to go onto the Post op boards so I did NOT. LOL . My surgery recovery has been fairly good, I agree that people who are having problems post more often. There are tons of people who don't experience any major issues, and it would seem like bragging if you hjave nothing bad to say.I do wish you all the best with your own recovery!

No it is not just you, sometimes the post-op post can be kind of a downer. I have learned to read whatever post that may be informative and even with that you will have to step away and do something positive for yourself to prepare for the surgery. Get a pretty nighty, clean the house, go shopping, read anything but get overly anxious. It will be okay.
