No HRT, post breast cancer, LAVH on Jan 5, 2005 What to do?
Hi ladies, I am nervous about my upcoming LAVH on Jan. 5, since my 5 years on Tamoxifen and past history with breast cancer, i can't take HRT. Anyone in this situation? What do you do about all those hot flashes, night sweats and mood stuff? I guess I am more nervous about the aftereffects than the actual surgery. My doctor told me that I cant take all the black cohosh and stuff. Also, since my transvag. ultrasound my right ovary has been bothering me, but they told me it was a normal looking cyst.Heat packs seems to help, but I feel like I have a long wait for surgery and don't know how I'll keep my sanity. Between grad school and working full time I certainly have things to keep me busy, and of course there's all the holiday preps and cleaning and nesting as I approach the day. But its hard getting through each day right now. how do you stay positive.?

You've found a good place to start. This site was wonderful for me during the pre-op days. I was nervous too before surgery no mater how busy I kept myself. I suggest this site's Hormone Jungle on your hormone issues. It has a wide variety of perspectives. Hope it helps.

Hi 50hystyclogs and welcome! I'm glad you found us. What type of breast cancer did you have, and what has your oncologist recommended? I had a lumpectomy for breast cancer earlier this year, after having been on HRT two years since my hyst in 2002, and I am still on HRT.
There is a lot of great information on HRT and breast cancer in our Resources directory. Here's a link to the breast cancer section, where it's located:
https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/lin...=browse&cid=14
I highly recommend getting a pot of nice warm tea and a comfortable reading spot and browsing through that directory... it may help you understand the pros and cons and alternatives.
After that, you may want to visit both the Hormone Jungle and No-Hormone Desert Oasis forums, which are for women who are on HRT and women who cannot or choose not to use HRT, respectively. There you can read the stories of other women who are dealing with menopausal symptoms, and what works (or doesn't) for them.
Read, read and read some more... imho knowledge is power. That's the best way I know to stay positive during this trying time.
Good luck with your surgery!
s,
-Linda
