Fibroids, Endometriosis & PMS: Take it all?

I'm 43 and my abdominal hysterectomy is scheduled for 5/17. I've been putting it off for years! I have large fibroids (largest @ 7cm) and endometriosis with pain. One ovary will be removed due to an obvious chocolate cyst and I am trying to decide if I should tell my dr to leave the other ovary if it is healthy. I was leaning towards keeping it (if healthy), as I can always have it removed later if endometriosis is still a problem, but I am currently experiencing PMS symptoms that has me questioning this "wisdom"! Do all PMS symptoms remain if an ovary is kept but the uterus is removed? My symptoms include moodiness, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, general physical weakness, and brain fog.
Thanks so much!

Re: Fibroids, Endometriosis & PMS: Take it all?

Reasons to keep the ovary include the protective effects of estrogen on your bone density, heart and cognitive function. The bad news is that if you keep the ovary, it will continue to go through its hormonal cycles. There were still be one week a month when progesterone is dominant, which means you'll still experience PMS. Obviously you won't experience uterine cramping or bleeding, but any non-uterine symptoms - yeah. :-(

Hi ecanto01 to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site!

From this site I have learned that a hysterectomy or removal of ovaries will not cure endo. Here are articles that discuss this:

Can Endometriosis Return after a Hysterectomy?
Should I Keep My Ovaries or Not if I Have Endometriosis?
Should I Keep My Healthy Ovary?

Regarding the PMS, SurprisedInNB is correct in that you will still experience PMS symptoms since those are coming from the hormones in your ovaries.

I know this is such an overwhelming experience with much to consider. Whatever you do, make the right decision for you. Talk to your doctor about your concerns, and the long-term pros and cons of this surgery.

Re: Fibroids, Endometriosis & PMS: Take it all?

I chose to keep my healthy ovaries, and I'm glad I did.

I had just turned 46 ~ I wasn't ready for surgically induced menopause, and I wasn't sure how I felt about HRT. I would have had to do a lot of research on that.

I still get "The PMS Munchies", as I call it, but I have to wonder....is it PMS? I really have no idea when I'm cycling. No period to confirm it!
