Smelly incision

I still have 5 steri strips on 3 weeks after surgery. I haven't had any oozing or drainage and the incision is pretty red. Today I lifted up my belly (a little droopy from my triplet pregnancy 16 yrs ago) and got a whiff of a funky smell. I pulled two strips off and they came off pretty easy but the tape smelled horrible. I don't know if its the tape or the incision that is odorish. Anyone put Any type of antiseptic on like hydrogen peroxide to clean the outside?

Re: Smelly incision

My doctor told me to put anything on the incision until after I was cleared to do so (that wasn't until six weeks). I would recommend calling your doctor. The redness and odor may be signs of infection.

Re: Smelly incision

I think Wohali is right. My doc also told me not to put anything on my incisions. He did later say I could use bacitracin if I wanted to, but that was after he looked at everything. If the steri strips are smelly it is likely coming from your angry incision. Give your doc a call.

Re: Smelly incision

Called dr and went in. Told the incision is not infected, to use some hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball to clean the area. The smell is from granulated tissue forming. I have a few post op staple blisters also. But feels better to have clearance and no issues. Just a little stinky!
