Having a TAH, maybe it should be TVH??
I'm scheduled July 10th for a TAH for excessive bleeding submucousal ? fibroid. It is like I am 10 weeks pregnant, I don't show. Sounds like a TVH is much easier but my doc said it would be a much longer and more complicated surgery cause they would have to chop up the fibroid and uterus to get it out. Called another doc who did LAVH and he said the same thing, fibroid too big. Is this the reason most women have a TAH??

Having a TAH, maybe it should be TVH??
Hi...
There are lots of reasons that doctors choose TAH...sometimes the stuff that needs to come out is too big, or they need to be able to have a really good look around, or need to remove things they might not be able to reach.
Sometimes women go in expecting a TVH and the doctor finds s/he needs more room, and they end up with TAH! Or vise versa.
Your doctor will do the surgery that is best for your particular situation. Either way, you'll end up feeling much better!
Good luck!

Having a TAH, maybe it should be TVH??
I am having a TAH in September. I was disappointed as I really wanted a TVH. My doctor said the TVH surgery is longer and he really wants to take a good look around once he is in there and it is easier to do with a TAH.
Don''t worry we have to trust our doctors.

Having a TAH, maybe it should be TVH??
Hi Michele. I may have a TAH but right now he is seeing if we can do an TVH..... He examined me and said push like your having a bowel movement. I did as hard as I could as he could barely reach my uterus. He knew I was so nervous and he told the nurse standing there that we "should" be able to do vaginal. Well for as hard as he was pushing and the should makes me believe it will be abdominal.
So for some it may be because there uterus' are too high or like others have said that ovaries and such are too large to take out vaginally.
Hugs,
Michelle

Reason for my TAH
The reason I had a TAH instead of a VH is that my uterus was "too rigid" and didn't have the "right flexibility" to be removed through the vagina.
Sounds weird, but it's true!

Having a TAH, maybe it should be TVH??
I was scheduled for a TVH/BSO, but when DR. went in with the laproscope, my uterus was 14 week size and he felt a vaginal would be too risky. Abdominal wasn't so bad (bikini incision), and I have confidence that he performed the procedure that was best for my overall health.

Having a TAH, maybe it should be TVH??
I had to have TAH due to the size of my uterus and the fact that it was tipped backwards. It isn't so bad....I was happy that the DD got to take a good look inside me and check out my ovaries good before leaving them in.... Sue

Having a TAH, maybe it should be TVH??
Hi Chele
I had my surgery for fibroids and rectocele, last December. I was originally scheduled for a TAH/BSO, but my doctor, after I asked a few times whether or not a TVH was possible, decided to try for a TVH at the very last minute. He examined me while I was undo so I only found out he was successful when I woke up.
The decision was largely influenced by the fact that I had given birth to two very large babies (over 9 lbs) vaginally. Also, the rectocele repair is done vaginally. This way, I wasn't facing discomfort in two areas, just one
One thing that surprised me was that the initial recovery for a TVH was the same as for a TAH: 6 to 8 weeks. However, there is less initial pain, since we are not dealing with an external incision.
One consequence of the TVH was the enormous blood loss that I suffered during surgery, which is one of the risks of removing large fibroids vaginally. I barely avoided a transfusion and was on iron pills for a month.
You might want to ask your doctor to try for a TVH. This way you'll know that, whatever the procedure ends up to be, you did get the procedure that was best for you .
Wishing you the best of luck.

Thanks for the replies. I do think one reason he wants to do a TAH is the problem of blood loss. During my last emergency D&C he told me he came within a hair of doing a hyster. The next morning he told me that I bled more than any other patient he's had, I wasn't even in the text books! So I think doing it TAH there's less of a risk of needing a transfusion. I feel ok with a TAH, I guess it's the loss of my figure that I'm worried about. The swelling stories here can be scary!

Michele, I had a TVH and I still had the dreaded "swelly belly". That is in fact just your body's reaction to pain, healing and overdoing it. Much like a knee injury - or surgery - will cause your knee to swell up.
The best way to avoid a swelly belly, is by being a good and resting with your feet up.
