Still not sleeping all night - any suggestions?

I'm 5 weeks post-op from LAVH/BSO. I went back to work at 4 weeks post op. I'm not having a problem going to sleep but staying asleep is a real challenge. I've been taking melatonin and the DR has prescribed a sleep aid but haven't taken it yet. Any other suggestions???? I'm tired of being tired.

I hear ya. Every night is different. I have finally slept a good portion of the weekend. No idea why and I too don't understand. I haven't gone back to work yet as I am still struggling with pain. So i think that is part of my problem not sleepin! I get like 3-4 hours solid then i'm up. I have just let it go as I don't understand and I never will.... Sorry I'm not much help but your not the only one!

I am sleeping but very fitfully. I cannot stay in one position for long! I wish I had ideas but I don't. I just try to rest all day to make up for it!

Re: Still not sleeping all night - any suggestions?

Homeny, dear Hyster-sister, if the doc gave you something to help you sleep, please try it. You won't know if is could be helping if you don't try it. I'm still amazed by all the physical changes in my body. (I'm almost 6 weeks post op, feeling hot and can't sleep for the first night. I don't know if this is a hot "flash" or not. It's been going on for over an hour.) maybe I should take my own advice and try the hormone replacement my doc gave me....Just what does a hot "flash" feel like?

Still not sleeping all night - any suggestions?

Hey homeny,
Sleep depravation can make everything worse, physically and emotionly. You don't have anything to lose by taking your.dr prescription, but do have lots of potential gains if you do! Hear's praying for that good night's sleep

Re: Still not sleeping all night - any suggestions?

I have been back at work for two weeks. Believe me, that helps getting to sleep at night! I was still waking up after 4 hours or so when I first started back. I have been taking a herbal sleep aid - valerian, magnesium and lemon balm. It doesn't make me go to sleep but the sleep I am getting is deeper and more restful. I am also starting to sleep a little longer at night.

Above all, don't get upset and stressed because you can't get back to sleep. It just makes it worse. Learn to embrace the night lol

Re: Still not sleeping all night - any suggestions?

I chose to stay 2 nights in the hospital so I could get more rest! With 6 kids at home my doctor said he understood, and said it would be better for me to stay. That evening my nurse asked me, "What is your goal for tonight?" I said, to sleep all night!! So she loaded me up with 2 benadryl pills, 2 ambien (sp? sleeping pills) and 2 pain meds! That was the BEST sleep I've had since my surgery and now I am 18 days post -op. If I need to take prescribed sleeping pill, I will do so in a hearbeat. Right now I am on prescription antibiotics that make me dizzy/sleepy so I don't have to take my melatonin. I did take it one time and it was overkill w/my antibiotics-couldn't sleep fitfully until about 3am that time. Also, make sure your sleeping environment is comfortable and peaceful. I had to TELL my husband he had to start wearing those strips on his nose to keep the snoring noise down! I also have 2 king size pillows propped up behind me, and my smaller pillow. I have 2 queen size pillows on either side of my body, and 2 pillows under my feet. Another item that helps me to relax is the noise machine where I can listen to ocean waves, night sounds, rain sounds, etc. It really helps me to calm down and sleep! Sometimes I run my bathroom fan for quiet noise too. I hope this helps everyone! Have a restful night! robyn

Re: Still not sleeping all night - any suggestions?

I'm 14 days post op LAVH. I had not had a decent night sleep since surgery. I finally gave up yesterday and went to Dr. He gave me a script for 10mg Ambien. I took it last night and slept for almost 9 hours!! I feel so much better today. It's so important to rest - if you're not getting proper rest, you're not healing as quickly as you could.
