3 months post total hysterectomy (kept ovaries): My hair and scalp post op is making me crazy!!!

My entire life (40 years) I have had dry scalp and slight dandruff issues. I use a dry scalp shampoo, and only wash my hair two to three times a week. I have super thick curly/wavy hair. Under control. No problem.

Since surgery (TAH) almost three months ago my hair and scalp are revolting against me and driving me nuts!

My hair now falls out at a more alarming rate(I am on a thyroid pill...not sure if that helps or hinders).
My scalp started tingling so much 5 weeks post op, I had to take allergy pills for a short time.
My scalp feels like it is scaly and scabbing in certain areas.
I have switched shampoos, only use conditioner on the ends, and eliminated most product, but I still feel like I have a product build up.
I wash my hair more now, so my hair is getting dry, but my scalp still feels oily and scaly.

I kept my ovaries which are working. I have no other hormonal issues. I eat healthy, and drink tons of water. I rub coconut oil through my hair and into my scalp when it gets super bad. Seems to help for about two seconds...

I've heard that anesthesia and medication can affect hair, but wouldn't it be getting better 3 months out?

Did anyone else have these kinds of issues? I'd love to hear if anyone has and if you figured out any sort of solution?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you! That helps on the loss part.

I still don't understand the scaly scalp part. That's worse than the loss...

I can only imagine your frustration. Briefly after my hysterectomy I experienced hair loss, but once my hormones balanced themselves out, it stopped. Have you had your hormone levels checked lately?

I think I've read in the site that biotene shampoo worked for a few of the ladies. Not sure if that would help you.

I would talk to your doctor and see what s/he says.

My scalp has been scaly and itchy too. I am only six weeks out, but definitely feels weird. I haven't noticed extra hair falling out maybe that is coming.

I have had surgeries before and yes this is an anesthesia side effect. I have it right now also. Frustrating and embarrassing but you are doing all the right things☺️

You may want to check with a dermatologist.
Could also be diet issue: Diets low in vitamin B, vitamin D, good fats, and zinc can actually present in the form of a dry, itchy scalp.

Once a week, do a coconut oil mask, for 24 hours if you can

I had everything checked at my 6 week appointment and it was normal.

I have a dermatologist apt next week for the mole that was removed from my stomach during surgery. I can ask her. Thanks! I'll also look into different shampoo.

I take vitamins and eat healthy. I will try the coconut oils mask longer.

I heard tea tree oils helps, but I feel like it makes mine worse.

Thank you!
