Re: Post-Op 4 Days "I am getting scared"

Also, keep in mind as you take the softeners that you may not recognize your body's "gotta poop" signs immediately after surgery. Everyone is different, but more than a few of us myself included realized that when we got a left-side cramp and gas pains, that it was time to get to the bathroom and have a gentle push.

Strangely, it didn't feel like the familiar "gotta poop" sensation, just a cramp and gas pain on the lower left side. But when I sat on the toilet, sure enough ...

After a few weeks, my body sort of got its head back on straight, and now I'm back to my familiar "gotta poop" sensation that I can recognize without having to deduce my way to it. But while you're recovering, your body might be sending some unfamiliar signals since the landscape in your middle is a bit unfamiliar right now.

Be patient though, take the softeners, and try not to stress out too much about it. It's amazing how unsettling and indeed frightening it can feel to eat food without any sense of security that it will find its way out again. *hug* Things will straighten themselves out though, and you'll feel much more relaxed when they do.

I agree - definitely take the stool softener. You don't want to strain to have a bm. My doctor recommended the prune juice - 8 oz worked in less than two hours. I am continuing the stool softeners (prescribed by the doc) until I am told not to. They are not habit forming.

This would be advice exactly. And, don't strain. It WILL come. Hugs!!
